RCB Library On-Line Catalogue
The Representative Church Body Library in Braemor Park, Churchtown, Dublin, is, among other things the Church of Ireland’s theological library and the library of first resort for those who are engaged in training for the ordained ministry. The nature of this training has changed significantly with the introduction of new courses which can be part time and non-residential and in response to this the RCB Library’s catalogue of printed books will be available on-line.
The work of converting the card catalogue to a computer based catalogue has been quietly proceeding for some time. Records for some 21,000 titles have been computerised and so the working core of the Library’s modern collections – essentially those books which are required by ordinands - is now available in electronic form. This new catalogue will be available through the Church of Ireland website – www.ireland.anglican.org.
At the same time a new cataloguing and management system has been installed in the Library which, it is hoped, will make access to the collections easier both for those who who are engaged in distance learning and those who are resident in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute in Braemor Park. To further facilitate those in training the Library will be open until 9pm on Monday evenings during lecture term.
This is the beginning of a long term project to make information on the Library’s collections more available. Work will continue on converting the remainder of the printed books collection to electronic format; it is hoped to make the catalogue of parish records (over 1,000 collections) available on-line; and the staff will continue to prepare the catalogue of manuscripts (some 850 collections) for on-line access.
