Bolton Library Book Fair & Auction
Next Thursday and Friday, in the University of Limerick, there will be a book auction and a book fair in aid of the Bolton Library, Cashel. These events have been organized by the Bolton?s Board of Management and the University of Limerick Library and are aimed at raising funds for urgent work on the Bolton Library and its collections and to initiate an endowment fund for its future.
Writers and publishers are invited to donate works for auction, together with a piece of handwriting about the work in question. It is hoped that the writers of Ireland will help to save this national but neglected treasure house of centuries of writing.
The Library was created by the will of Theophilus Bolton, Archbishop of Cashel, in 1744 which left some 12,000 volumes, including many from the renowned collector, Archbishop William King, to the clergy and diocese of Cashel but without any endowment. Successive custodians have struggled to maintain the collection and despite an impressive restoration during the tenure of the late Dean of Cashel, the Very Revd David Woodworth, his successor, Dr Philip Knowles faced a considerable challenge. However, the creation of a new Board of Management, chaired enthusiastically by Mr George Cunningham, and an arrangement with the University of Limerick Library to provide professional support, augurs well for the future. What is needed now is money to allow these new structures to bring the intellectual riches of this collection to a wider audience.
Details of the book fair and auction may be had from George Cunningham.
