Continuing Education Course In Christ Church, Dublin
Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, will take a new initiative next spring with the provision of a six week evening course in ?Art and Music in the Life of the Christian Church?. An increasing feature of modern missionary outreach in the English cathedrals, formal courses in the field of adult and continuing education are less usual in the context of Church of Irelandcathedrals.
On Monday evenings over a period of six weeks (7 February to 14 March 2005), an introduction to the history of art and music in the context of the Christian tradition through the centuries will be provided by means of illustrated lectures. The evening will comprise 2 lectures, one on art followed by one on music.
The art lectures will feature such topics as great religious paintings, architecture, stained glass and icons, while the music lectures will include the history of the organ, the oratorio, the Anglican choral tradition and modern liturgical music. Speakers include Dr Raymond Keaveney, (Director of the National Gallery), Dr Nicola Gordon-Bowe (NCAD), Dr Barra Boydell (NUI Maynooth), Dr Rachel Moss (Irish Art Research Centre TCD), Dr Jennifer O?Reilly (UCC) and Andrew Johnstone (Christ Church and TCD).
This course has been devised by Aonghus Dwane, course director, in consultation with Stuart Kinsella, Dr Kenneth Milne and members of the cathedral?s archives and education committee. Further details and a course registration form may be obtained by contacting Mr Dwane by telephone at 01-4737118. The closing date for registration is 31 December 2004.
