Lunchtime Lecture Series Examines Profile of a Pontiff (Connor)

Former Queen’s University chaplain, the Rev Paddy McGlinchey, delivered a fascinating lecture on Pope Benedict XVI at St Bartholomew’s, Stranmillis Road, at lunchtime on Tuesday September 7.

Paddy, currently lecturer in Missiology at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute in Dublin, entitled his lecture ‘Profile of a Pontiff,’ and over a 35 minute period explored the Augustinian roots of the theology of Joseph Ratzinger.

Paddy is working on a doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Stephen Williams of Union College, Belfast, which will make a comparative assessment of evangelical theology and the thinking of the current Pope. Prior to serving as Chaplain in Queen’s he was involved in local ecumenical ministry in East Anglia and has particular experience in the establishment of new centres of worship through church-planting.

He is the author of a monograph published under the auspices of the Church of Ireland Evangelical Fellowship on the theology of Brian Maclaren, one of the founders of the Emerging Church movement.

More than 30 people attended the event, one in an ongoing series of lunchtime lectures organised by the Rev Ron Elsdon, Rector of St Bartholomew’s, and his Curate the Rev Janice Elsdon.

Paddy was welcomed by the rector, and the interest in his talk and topic was evidenced by the number of questions raised during the Q&A session at the end of the lecture. Light refreshments were then served, giving time for more discussion on the subject.
