Primary School Year Begins in Cork, Cloyne & Ross

Church Service Marks start of Primary School
Year in Cork, Cloyne and Ross

Nearly 500 primary school pupils, teachers, parents, board members, clergy and school volunteers in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross joined the Bishop – the Right Reverend Paul Colton – at a Service to mark the start of the school year in Saint Peter’s Church in Bandon, Co. Cork on Thursday morning, 23rd September.

The theme of the Service was ‘Salt and Light’ and, basing his words on the story of Jesus in the Gospels about salt and light, Bishop Colton asked the children to try, in this school year, to make a difference: to care about things that are wrong in the world and to stand up against them. ‘Like salt and light in so many situations in our world, we can each do our own small part in making things better,’ the Bishop said.

Apart from that talk given by the Bishop, the children themselves took the liturgy – reading the prayers, singing and readings. Every school was introduced to the others through the banners they had made. As people from each school stood up each school rang its distinctive school bell.

At the end of the Service the Bishop took his own school bell and led the happy and energetic ringing of all the school bells together in the Diocese to lead the children back to their year’s work at school in Cork, Cloyne and Ross.
