New Kildare Cathedral Choir CD Launched

Kildare Cathedral launches new choral & organ CD,

'The wonder of His works'

St Brigid’s cathedral choir Kildare is delighted to announce the launch of its new CD 'The wonder of His works'. It was launched on Sunday 26th September 2010 by Bishop Richard Clarke at a service of harvest thanksgiving in the cathedral.

'The wonder of His works' celebrates 30 years of the establishment of the cathedral choir by its founder Dean John Paterson and the completion of the restoration of the cathedral’s fine Conacher pipe organ.

Derek Verso, director and producer of the CD, says, 'The wonder of His works' offers the listener an enjoyable selection of the cathedral choir’s repertoire and an opportunity to experience the wonderfully restored sounds of the cathedral organ. Perhaps what makes this CD unique is the way the organ and choral pieces are closely interwoven together, sometimes by interposing choral variations between the verses of the five  selected hymns or by linking carefully selected choral and organ works together to hopefully achieve something new. Let the listener decide and enjoy!'

For the lover of choral music, 'The wonder of His works' includes classics such as 'The Heavens are telling' from Haydn’s 'Creation' or Faure’s 'Cantique de Jean Racine' as well as two of Ireland’s most famous hymns: 'Be thou my vision' and 'St Patrick’s Breastplate', both specially arranged by Derek Verso for this recording. For the pipe organ lover, there is Bach’s 'Prelude & Fugue in G' (bwv541) and Buxtehude’s great 'G minor Prelude & Fugue' as well as the ever popular 'Arrival of the Queen of Sheba' by Handel. Something for everyone!

'The wonder of His works is directed and produced by Derek Verso with Hilary Dickinson-Guter (organ). All proceeds go to support the music of the cathedral – the choir and help to defray the organ restoration costs. The CD will be on sale in the cathedral and at Kildare Heritage Centre.
