Celebration of Archbishop Caird’s Ministry

Tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, there will be a special Choral Evensong to celebrate the ministry of Donald Caird. An address will be delivered by the Ven. Gordon Linney and the service will be followed by a reception in the crypt. All are welcome to both the service and reception.

Michaelmas Day, 29 September, last was the 60th anniversary of Donald Caird’s ordination, the 40th anniversary of his consecration as a bishop and the 25th anniversary of his election as archbishop of Dublin. All these events took place in Christ Church cathedral.

Bishop Caird’s ministry has been rich and varied. A curacy in Belfast, teaching in Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, and lecturing in St David’s College, Lampeter, preceded his appointment as Rector of Rathmichael in 1960, which he combined with lecturing in philosophy in TCD. A short period as Dean of Ossory was followed by his election as Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert & Aghadoe in 1970 and his subsequent translation to Meath & Kildare in 1976 and then on to Dublin & Glendalough in 1985 where he served until his retirement in 1996.

An attachment to scholarship, a love of the Irish language, an intensely strong sense of duty and unimpeachable integrity have been hall marks of a ministry which will be fullsomely celebrated tomorrow (Sunday).

Today (Saturday) the Meath & Kildare Diocesan Synod will be held in Wilson’s Hospital School, Multyfarnham. In St George’s Church, Belfast, at 2.30pm Changing Attitude Ireland, which seeks to affirm the place of gay and lesbian people in the church, will hold a celebration of the Eucharist at which as address will be given by David Watson, who was Vice President of the British Methodist Conference, 2008-9.

The Rector of Greystones, the Revd David Mungavin, will preach at the Kilbride Harvest Festival tomorrow (Sunday) morning and at the first of the Gospel Eucharists of the new season in Powerscourt Church, Enniskerry, led by the Enniskerry Gospel Choir. A new series of sermons on the theme of ‘Virtues and Vices’ begins at the Choral Eucharist in Trinity College Chapel where the Chaplain, the Revd Darren McCallig, will preach on ‘Faith’. At Evensong in St Anne’s Cathedral the Dean of Belfast, Dr Houston McKelvey, will receive the standard of the Belfast Burma Star Association for laying up in the cathedral.

On Monday morning there will be a service in St Michan’s Church, Dublin, at 10.15am to mark the beginning of the Michaelmas Law term. The address will be given by the Archbishop of Dublin and the service will followed by Morning Coffee in the King’s Inns. At 1pm congregations in the greater Leeson Street area are invited to a short ecumenical service of prayer in St Finian’s Lutheran Church, Adelaide Road, followed by lunch in the Luherhaus. It is hoped that this will become a monthly event.

On Friday evening at 7.30pm the annual Diocesan Service for Primary Schools and Junior Schools will be held in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. The Archbishop of Dublin will preside and the preacher on the theme of ‘The Water of Life’ will be Martin O’Connor, Education Advisor to the Bishops’ Appeal.

From 15 to 17 October there will be a festival in Dublin to celebrate the life and work of the Dublin born composer, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, with choral services, lectures and concerts in St Stephen’s church and in Christ Church and St Patrick’s cathedrals.
