New Book on Liturgical Space

For many years the Church of Ireland has concentrated on producing texts for worship in its work of liturgical renewal. Now the emphasis is moving to the places and spaces where these texts are used. Recognising that fresh texts often demand a fresh context, Liturgical Space and Church Re-ordering: issues of good practice, published by Church of Ireland Publishing, attempts to show how good and theologically-informed liturgical practice can be consonant with best practice in matters of architecture and care of heritage buildings.

These guidelines have been developed by the Liturgical Advisory Committee and are published with the authority of the General Synod. The publication should be of considerable value to parishes contemplating the re-ordering of their liturgical space and ought also to be useful in conversations with planners and statutory heritage bodies. The booklet contains advice on contextual and practical matters and wider considerations as well as a useful bibliography, resource list and appendices relating to re-ordering in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Another new liturgical publication is Sing to the Word 2. Compiled by Bishop Edward Darling, this is a CD of suggested hymns from the Church Hymnal(5th ed.) to accompany the Lectionary for a Second Service in the Book of Common Prayer 2004.

Yet another new liturgical publication comes from Dr Margaret Daly-Denton a former lecturer in biblical studies and liturgy in the Church of Ireland Theological College. Psalm-Shaped Prayerfulness: a Guide to the Christian Reception of the Psalms, published by the Columba Press, seeks to be a guide through the long, and on-going, process of re-interpretation of this important part of Christian worship. The book is intended for, among others, church musicians, members of parish liturgy teams and for those in training for ministry.

Over the course of this weekend all part time students in training will be in residence at the Theological Institute. There are currently 10 part time M Th and 5 NSM students. Today (Saturday)  the twenty eight students who are completing the third cycle of the Foundation Course will also attend for their final Day Conference. At this, in addition to spending time in worship and in discussion groups, they will have lectures from Dr Maurice Elliott (Director,CITI) and Dr Tim Hull ( St John’s Nottingham). Meanwhile in Germany the Bishop of Cork will be attending the European Consortium for Church and State Research in the University of Trier where he will read a paper on ‘Religion in Public Education in Ireland’

Tomorrow (Sunday) morning  Remembrance Sunday will be marked in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, with a Requiem Eucharist while in St Patrick’s Cathedral Evensong, at which the preacher will be the Abbott of Glenstal, Dom Patrick Hederman, will be broadcast live on RTE Radio 1. In Christ Church, Gorey, the Remembrance Service will mark the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Niemba in which nine Irish soldiers were killed while in St Mary’s Garrison Church, Tipperary, there will be a Remembrance Service conducted by the Dean of Cashel.

On Monday evening in Rathfarnham parish church the Bishop of Clogher will speak on ‘Searching for answers to today‘s questions – from embryology to euthanasia’ while in Mullavilly, Co. Armagh, Bishop James Mehaffey, a former parishioner, will launch  Mullavilly – Portrait of an Ulster Parish by Brett Hannam.
