150th Anniversary Celebrations in Nenagh
Tomorrow (Sunday) the 150th anniversary of the consecration of St Mary’s church, Nenagh, will be marked. On the exact anniversary of the consecration the Archbishop of Armagh will preside at an Advent Eucharist at 3pm with the Bishop of Limerick & Killaloe and the Rector of Nenagh, Canon Marie Rowley-Brooke.

St Mary’s church was consecrated on 19 December 1860 in the presence of the Bishop of Killaloe, Lord Riversdale. It replaced an earlier church in Kenyon Street which had become unfit for worship. The church was designed by the architect of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Joseph Welland, and his drawings for St Mary’s are preserved in the Representative Church Body Library. Tablets from the old Kenyon Street church were transferred to the new building and commemorate, among others, the Holmes family, once landlords of Nenagh, and the Finches of Kilcolman, one of whom, was Governor of Tipperary in the late 17th century. The east window is a memorial to the Revd James Hill Poe, Rector of Nenagh, who initiated the building of the new church.

Today, St Mary’s is a focal point for the local Church of Ireland community in Nenagh and the centre for a group of parishes which includes Templederry and Killodiernan
