Statement by Archbishop Neill on the death of Pope John Paul II
Message from the Most Revd Dr John R W Neill, Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin to the Papal Nuncio and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr Diarmuid Martin on the Death of Pope John Paul II
On behalf of the Church of Ireland people and clergy of Dublin and Glendalough and of the Province of Dublin, I convey to Your Excellency and to Your Eminence deepest sympathy on the death of Pope John Paul II, Bishop of Rome. We shared in your anxiety as we saw the suffering of the Pope during these last few weeks and months.
Pope John Paul II inspired the Irish people on his visit to Ireland with his warmth and joyful faith, and many of all Christian traditions joined together in preparing for this visit, and in the many events associated with it. For us as members of the Anglican Communion, his visit to Canterbury was unique and of great ecumenical significance.
Throughout his pontificate spanning the last quarter century, the late Pope stood for Christian values in issues of human rights and freedom, and played a vital part in the liberation of Eastern Europe that for generations had been subject to atheistic communism. He was truly a peacemaker who followed in the steps of the Prince of Peace.
As fellow baptised Christians, we pray that those who are bereaved may be comforted; and that God will bring John Paul and the whole Church living and departed in the Lord Jesus to the joy, unity and fulfilment of his eternal Kingdom.
At a time of sadness for so many Christians throughout the world, we must pray and work together for that unity which is God?s calling to the Church now.
