Church of Ireland Notes from The Irish Times

New APCK Leaflets

One of the more unlikely publishing successes in Church of Ireland circles in recent years has been the series of leaflets on belief and practice produced by the APCK. These have been designed both for members of the Church of Ireland, as well as for enquirers, and have been well received.

The first series of leaflets dealt with the history of the Church of Ireland, its modes of administration and its distinctive position as a Church which is both catholic and protestant. A second series, more doctrinal in content, considered the Bible, the Eucharist and the role of Mary as virgin and mother.

Two new leaflets are now available and they are entitled ?The Communion of Saints? and ?Death and Eternal Life?. Both are carefully considered statements of what the Church of Ireland believes on these, at times, controversial subjects, and emphasise the breadth and inclusiveness of the Church?s position.

Copies will be circulated shortly to all stipendiary clergy. Otherwise, details of the availability of the new leaflets and the back stock may be had from Mr Keith Dungan, Church of Ireland House, Church Avenue, Rathmines, Dublin 6 (01-4966981).

A publication of a different kind is Redemption in Irish History by Dr John Marsden, Rector of Newbridge, and formerly Lecturer in Systematic Theology in the Church of Ireland Theological College. This is an analysis of forces and movements which have shaped modern Ireland and draws on history, politics, economics and theology. The book has been published by Dominican Publications at ?14.99.

This weekend is a Community Weekend in the Theological College for ordinands, spouses and their children. The Weekend will be led by the Bishop of Derry & Raphoe, the Rt Revd Ken Good and his wife Mary. Today (Saturday) the Crosslinks missionary society will have a lunch and presentation in the Irish Church Missions, Bachelors Walk, Dublin. The event will introduce Sarah Keene, the new Children?s and Youth Coordinator, and there will be presentations about the work of Darren and Karen McCartney in Arctic Canada and Karen Salmon in Ethiopia. In the evening in Waterford Cathedral there will be a concert by Camarata Kilkenny as part of the weekend arts festival named after John Roberts, the 18th century architect who designed both the Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic cathedrals in Waterford.

Tomorrow (Sunday) the Bishop of Limerick, Killaloe & Ardfert will ordain Capt Joe Hardy of the Church Army to the diaconate to serve in the Tralee and Dingle union of parishes. Capt Hardy has been a pastoral assistant in Tralee for the past 22 years. The Bishop of Cork will visit Durrus while the Bishop of Connor will be the preacher in the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin.

In Enniskerry there will be an Open Air Rogation Service in Powerscourt Church Field beginning at 11.30 am. Music will be provided by the Enniskerry Gospel Choir and there will be a Rogation Procession led by the children of the parish.

A new series of healing services begins in Belfast Cathedral in Monday at 8 pm. The first speaker in the ?Finding God?s Peace? series, organized by Bro David Jardine, will the former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Dr Godfrey Brown.

On Wednesday at 6.30 pm the organ recital in St Patrick?s Cathedral will be given by the Cathedral Organist, Peter Barley, while later in the evening the Archbishop of Dublin will introduce the Revd Edward Vaughan as Minister of St James? Church, Crinken, in succession to the Revd Gordon Fyles who has retired.
