Statement by the Rt Revd Peter F. Barrett, Bishop of Cashel & Ossory, on the closure of the Waterford Crystal plant in Dungarvan

The news of the closure of the Waterford Crystal Plant in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, alongside other restructuring measures elsewhere, is most disappointing to hear and very distressing for all involved. The intimate connection between the Company and the County over many years is deeply felt. Equally, the loss of employment on such a large scale, is very keenly felt throughout the whole community.

However, it is the entire workforce and their families who must cope with the effects of this dreadful news. It is earnestly to be hoped that all necessary assistance and support will be provided as generously and as speedily as possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who have served so loyally for many years, often over successive generations, coupled with our sincere appreciation.
