Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’

Saturday 10 March 2012

Archive of the Month
The March ‘Archive of the Month’ is a collaboration between the RCB Library and Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise with the text being presented in both Irish and English on the Church of Ireland website at www.ireland.anglican.org/libraray/archive

The presentation tells the story of Douglas Hyde’s ‘modern Irish’ translation of the hymn, St Patrick’s Breastplate’ which he produced in 1915 at the request of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise, the Irish Guild of the Church. The Guild had been founded in 1914 to promote the use of the Irish language in worship and to collect and publish suitable Irish prayers and hymns. Hyde’s translation of St Patrick’s Breastplate was written on five postcards and posted to Ethne Culverwell, a young member of he Guild, who had been deputed to contact Hyde.

This story is illustrated with images from the RCB Library where the records of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise and Hyde’s translation are held. These have been supplemented with material from the collections of Douglas Sealy, grandson of Hyde, and the Revd Martin Hilliard, Rector of Kells in Co. Kilkenny, who is a grandson of Ethne Culverwell.
