Christ Church Celebrations

Tomorrow (Sunday) is Trinity Sunday when churches which have a dedication to the Holy Trinity will celebrate their patronal festivals; this will be especially true in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, more properly known as the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, where the congregation of accustomed worshippers and visitors will be swelled by the presence of many of the Friends of Christ Church.

In the morning at the Sung Eucharist the preacher will be the Dean of Cork, the Very Revd Michael Burrows, and after lunch in the crypt the AGM of the Friends of Christ Church will be held. At Choral Evensong the pipes of the 32 foot stop for the organ and the wooden frontals that have been placed before the new chairs in the nave will be dedicated: many of these are memorial gifts. Following Evensong, at 5 pm, the Eucharist for Trinity Sunday will be celebrated in Irish in the Lady Chapel.

Today (Saturday) the meeting of the Friends of Medieval Dublin, in Trinity College, has a marked Christ Church dimension. There will, among other contributions, be papers by Maire Geaney on the roof timbers of Christ Church and by Raghnall O Floinn on a late medieval relic-list from the cathedral while Professor Roger Stalley will discuss Swords castle, one time residence of the archbishops of Dublin.

Today (Saturday) the Archbishop of Dublin will continue his participation in the meeting of the English bishops in Warwickshire which lasts until Wednesday. The Church?s Ministry of Healing will hold a conference in Holywood parish church, Co. Down, where the speaker on the theme ?Reflections on Dementia? will be Dr Heather Morris from Edgehill College, Belfast. In Whitechurch parish, Dublin, there will be a May Fete from 1-4 pm.

Tomorrow (Sunday) in St Mark?s Church, Portadown, the Archbishop of Armagh will ordain the Revd Malcolm Kingston, curate of St Mark?s, to the priesthood. The Friends of St Doulough?s Church, Balgriffin, will hold an Open Air Service beside the church at 3.30 pm with music from the Harold?s Cross Brass Band and an address by the former Archdeacon of Dublin, the Ven. Gordon Linney, while at the same time there will be a Diocesan Hymn Festival in St Flannan?s Cathedral, Killaloe, entitled ?The Great Names of Hymnody?. The Cullenswood Singers will present ?An Evening of Madrigals? in Sandford parish church, Dublin, at 7.30 pm while in St Fin Barre?s cathedral, Cork, there will be a recital by the celebrated Parisian organist, Sophie-Veronique Cauchefer-Choplin, at 8 pm.

The Chaplain of Trinity College, Dublin, Dr Alan McCormack, is on a visit to the USA where tomorrow (Sunday) he will preach in St Barnabas? Episcopal Church, Connecticut, and give a lecture on ?Liturgical Futurology?. Later in the week he will preach and lecture in the churches of St Gregory of Nyssa, San Francisco, and St Thomas the Apostle, West Holywood.

On Wednesday the organ recital in St Patrick?s Cathedral, Dublin, at 6.30 pm will be given by Michael Quinn.

Details have been released of the 2005 conference of the Irish College of Preachers which will be held in the Church of Ireland Theological College from 14 to 16 September. The speaker will be the Rt Revd Gordon Bates, until recently Bishop of Whitby, whose theme will be ?Preaching to the Comfortable, the Complacent and the Committed?. The conference is open to all, both lay and clerical, who are engaged in preaching. Further information may be had from the Revd Ferran Glenfield, Parish Office, Kill o? the Grange, Co.
