LINK Culturefest at St Michan’s
For many St Michan’s church, Dublin, is for ever associated with the mummies and no trip to Dublin was complete without a visit to shake the hand of the crusader. But while the vaults remain a part of the Dublin experience for tourists the parish is also renewing its engagement with the local community.

Next Friday evening at St Michan’s church the newly opened entrance to Smithfield Square will be blessed and dedicated at 7.30pm, followed by a Service of Thanksgiving for the Arts.  This will coincide with the launch of LINK Culturefest, the Smithfield community arts festival and the opening of a new community gallery in St Michan’s. The first exhibition is entitled ‘Reflections’ and is a mixed media exhibition by local artists Mella Travers and Maeve McCarthy inspired by the worshipping community of St Michan’s. Peruvian Jazz band Pisqua will play a free concert at 9pm and on Saturday night at 8.30 pm St Michan’s will host an evening of music by Trinity College Chamber Choir. This is part of a new church initiative to engage with the local artistic community which has emerged in Smithfield.

St Michan’s is part of the Christ Church cathedral group of parishes which is served by the Archdeacon of Dublin, the Ven. David Pierpoint and his curate the Revd David MacDonnell.

This evening (Saturday) at 8pm DIT Conservatory keyboard students will present ‘A Musical Miscellany’ in St Stephen’s church, Mount Street. This will feature music by, among others, Beethoven, Liszt and Debussy. Admission is free but donations will be accepted in aid of Camphill Communities.

Tomorrow (Sunday) in Belfast, Changing Attitude Ireland will be holding an ecumenical service to mark IDAHO, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. The IDAHO service will be in St George’s Church, High Street, at 3pm where the speaker will be Professor Michael O’Flaherty, Chief Commissioner of the NI Human Rights Commission. At 7pm in St Paul’s church, Glenageary, the combined choirs of Gleneageary and Monkstown parishes will sing Choral Evensong. The Rector of Glenageary, the Revd Gary Dowd, will conduct the service, the Rector of Monkstown, Canon Patrick Lawrence, will preach and the music will be directed by Raymond Russell and Derek Verso. In another of its ‘Quiet Services’ which are open to all Castle Archdale parish will hold ‘Sharing the Light’ a service of comfort and hope with the Bishop of Clogher.

The lunchtime recital in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick on Wednesday will be given by organist, Antony Matthews while in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, there will be a lunchtime concert by the Luther College Nordic Choir.

On Thursday evening at 7.30pm the Friends of St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, will hold their AGM in the Lady Chapel and this will be followed by a talk by the Cathedral Education Officer, Andrew Smith.

On Friday the Bishop of Cork will preside at the blessing and official opening of extensions to St Mary’s Church of Ireland National School, Carrigaline. At 8pm Bartle D’Arcy will give a lecture in Belvedere House, Mullingar, on how the events of the 1740s shaped the destiny of the Belvedere Estate. This event will be in aid of Kilbixy church roof fund
