Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’
Saturday 16 June 2012
The summer issue of the Church of Ireland journal, Search, which is edited by the Revd Dr Ginnie Kennerley, is now available, with a mix of topical and timeless features.
The Archbishop of Dublin, who last week was a participant in the Eucharistic Congress, considers how much our common baptism enables Christians to share together in our regular worship and witness. The other topical issue is human sexuality. The General Synod resolution of last month is no more than a marker on the journey towards a considered Church of Ireland response to new scientific and sociological material in this area, along with deeper biblical reflection. So it is hoped that three articles deriving from the Bishops’ Conference on Human Sexuality held in Cavan in March will help members of the Church in their further reflection and respectful listening to fellow Christians whose views, and maybe life experience, vary from their own. The articles, By Stephen Farrell, Doug Baker and Bishop Gregory Cameron respectively, cover legal, discussion process, and ecclesiological issues.
The series on Approaches to the Bible continues with an article by Jerusha McCormack, whose recent work at Beijing’s Foreign Studies University has led her to ponder the difficulties of inter–cultural communication, particularly as related to religion. The Dean of Lismore, the Very Revd Paul Draper, considers the ministry of a country cathedral to its visitors, and Tim Hudson writes about a clerical family, the Wynnes of Hazelwood, Co.Sligo.
Today (Saturday) the Limerick, Killaloe & Ardfert Diocesan Synod will be held in Aghancon parish hall, Co. Offaly. In Kilkenny the Friends of St Canice’s cathedral will attend Choral Evensong at 3pm followed by their AGM and tea in the Deanery. At 5pm the Archbishop of Dublin will attend a Reunion Evensong for past choristers in Christ Church cathedral as part of the Church of Ireland’s contribution to the Eucharistic Congress programme. The music will be provided by the Past Choristers Association who will sing alongside the Cathedral Choir. All former members of the Christ Church choir who would like to participate are welcome to attend – rehearsals begin at 2pm.
This ecumenical theme continues in Dublin City Library and Archives, Pearse Street, where an exhibition on the 1932 Eucharistic Congress includes material from the Representative Church Body Library relating to the 1932 Patrician Year conference in the Mansion House.
Tomorrow (Sunday) there will be a special Choral Evensong in St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. In Cashel cathedral Ms Lydia Monds, Education Officer of the Bishops’ Appeal, will speak at a Family Service which will be followed by a BBQ in the Deanery. In Kilkenny, at 5pm Malcolm Proud will give the final recital in the current Chapter Room Concert series of Bach Partitas.
The Standing Committee of the General Synod and the Executive Committee of the Representative Church Body will meet in Church of Ireland House, Dublin, on Tuesday.
The Down & Dromore Diocesan Synod will be held in Seagoe parish centre on Thursday while in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, the Cathedral Choir will give a Summer Concert at 7.30pm
On Wednesday in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, the lunchtime recital will be given by pianist, Gary O’Shea, who will play sonatas by Prokofiev and Beethoven.
On Thursday morning the Archbishop of Dublin will open the new building at the Model School, Athy, and in Friday evening he will address the Girls Friendly Society Conference in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute.
