Church of Ireland Notes from The Irish Times
Dean Brandon & the Falkland Islands
The Church of Ireland has a long and honourable tradition of supporting overseas missions and the work of CMS Ireland, the Mid-Africa Mission, Crosslinks, SAMS, the Leprosy Mission, USPG, the TCD missions, and others, testifies eloquently to this witness. Some of this work has been carefully chronicled in, for example, R.M. Gwynn?s TCD in China and Jack Hodgins? Sister Island. A History of the Church Missionary Society in Ireland but much remains to be written about Irish organizations and individuals who contributed to the life of the Church beyond these shores.
A recent contribution is a short study of Lowther Edward Brandon who was colonial chaplain to the Falkland Islands from 1877 to 1892 and Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, 1892-1907. Brandon was ordained in 1869 for the curacy of Clonmore in Co. Carlow and subsequently served as Rector of Kilnehue in Co. Wexford, before departing for Port Stanley in 1877. In the Falklands he became well known for his pastoral care of the community, the development of Sunday Schools, the promotion of abstinence and for his contribution to the building of Christ Church Cathedral. In 1908 he returned to Ireland and was curate-in-charge of Stratford-on-Slaney, Co. Wicklow, until his death in 1933.
His story is told by a more recent Chaplain to the Falkland Islands, Canon Gerry Murphy, who like Brandon was ordained for a curacy in the Church of Ireland and who served in Port Stanley from 1987 to 1991. The proceeds of Canon Murphy?s booklet will be sent to Christ Church Cathedral, Port Stanley, and copies may be had from him at Saffron Close, Heacham, Norfolk PE31 7JA at Stg £2.50 each.
