BACI Course
The Biblical Association for the Church of Ireland (BACI) has announced details of its ‘Introduction Day to the Bible Society’s H+ (Basic Hermeneutics) Course’ which will be held n the Theological Institute in Dublin on Saturday September 8th. It will be conducted by Michael Pfundner from the Bible Society, accompanied by the Revd Dr David Spriggs, Bible Society UK’s Bible and Church Consultant. The day is designed for potential leaders of a 10–week course which has been designed by Dr Andrew Rogers, and is sponsored by the UK Bible Society. This is a beginners course in biblical interpretation (hermeneutics). The course takes scholarly insights and makes them accessible to the uninitiated. It also focuses on a number of virtues that have characterised faithful biblical reading through the history of the Church such as honesty, humility and courage. In this way, the course combines theory with practice.

Further information and registration details may be had from the Revd Dr William Olhausen, at [email protected] or Judy Wilkinson, at [email protected]. Those attending the training day will need to have a certain amount of theological/biblical training, so they should ideally be clergy, lay readers or other suitably qualified lay members of the diocese. BACI hopes that every diocese might be represented so that these courses can begin to run across the Church of Ireland at a local level.

Heritage Week events continue this week.  In Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, there will be guided tours each day at 11 am and 2.30pm, beginning on Monday. In addition there will be themed lunchtime tours by Dr Michael O’Neill (floor tiles), Ms Sue Hemmens (music), Dr Kenenth Milne (19th century restoration), Mr Leslie Taylor (belfry) and Mrs Lesley Whiteside (stained glass). Tomorrow (Sunday) in St Lachtain’s church, Freshford, Co. Kilkenny there will be a service to mark the completion of the church’s conservation plan.

Tomorrow (Sunday) the services in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, will be sung by the Cathedral Past Choristers while in St Patrick’s cathedral, Armagh, the Eucharist will be sung by the Charles Wood Boys’ Choir and Festal Evensong by the Charles Wood Singers and Boys’ Choir. In St Flannan’s cathedral, Killaloe, the Dean of Killaoe, Dr Stephen White, will conduct his final service before taking up a position in the Church of England.

On Monday evening the Bishop of Down & Dromore will institute the Revd Stanley Gamble to the incumbency of Killinchy union of parishes, and on Thursday evening the Bishop of Clogher will introduce Capt David Hamilton, from the Church Army, as evangelist with responsibility for the Aghadrumsee group of parishes in Co. Monaghan.

On Friday Denis Reardon retires from his post as Chief Officer and Secretary of the Representative Church Body. An accountant by training, he joined the staff of Church of Ireland House in 1997 as Head of Finance and in 2002 succeeded Robert Sherwood as Chief Officer. His time as Chief Officer has been largely overshadowed by the effects of the economic crisis on church finances which have involved tighter budgets and fewer staff but he has presided over this new regime with forbearance, equanimity and occasional flashes of humour.

On Friday evening in St Iberius’ church, Wexford the Bishop of Cashel & Ossory will ordain to the priesthood the Revd Nicola Halford, as curate for Wexford & Kilscoran Union, and the Revd James Wallace, as curate for Waterford Union. At 8pm in Belvedere House, Mullingar, Thomas Packenham will give a lecture on 300 years of the Tullynally demense, in aid of Kilbixy church.
