Statement by Rt Revd Peter Barrett, Bishop of Cashel & Ossory, on the death of Tara Whelan

The dreadful news of the death of Tara Whelan in the bus bomb in Kusadasi has been a cause of profound sadness and shock for all of us who live in the South-East of Ireland and County Waterford in particular. I wish to express my utter revulsion at such an indiscriminate act of terror, whose purpose was to injure, murder and terrify innocent people, who were in most instances, on holiday in a resort known personally to many Irish people.

On behalf of the entire Church of Ireland community, I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the members of Tara?s family and to her friends; her former classmates and teachers at the Mercy Secondary School in Waterford where Tara had just completed her Leaving Certificate examination.

To her heart-broken parents, brothers and sisters, and members of the family circle, I extend the prayers of the United Dioceses. We can only imagine what grief and shock you are experiencing at this time. But I wish you to know that we are remembering you all before the risen Lord Jesus, whose body still bears the marks of His passion and who holds Tara and us all in a single embrace of tender compassion and love.
