Pococke Book Launch
Next Friday volume 3
of Letters from Abroad: the Grand Tour
Correspondence of Richard & Jeremiah
Milles will be launched in the former Bishop’s Palace, now the headquarters
of the Heritage Council, in Kilkenny, by Professor George Huxley
Edited by Dr Rachel
Finnegan who is a Lecturer in Arts & Heritage Studies in Waterford
Institute of Technology, this is the third volume of an edition of previously
unpublished letters of Richard Pococke, later bishop of Ossory, and his cousin,
Jeremiah Milles, later dean of Exeter, to Pococke’s mother and to the uncle of
both cousins, Thomas Milles, bishop of Waterford & Lismore. This volume
covers the period 1727 to 1741 and includes letters from Pococke to his mother
from Egypt, the Holy Land, Syia, Lebanon,
Asia Minor, Turkey
and Greece.
Although these travels were documented in Pococke’s book, A Description of the East,
this is the first time that the correspondence has been published. The volume concludes
with an appraisal of Pococke’s reputation as a travel writer and a divine.

available from the publishers at www.pocockepress.com
