Mayor Martin Reilly Visits ‘The Big Weave’ At St Augustine’s

The Mayor of Derry City Council Cllr Martin Reilly visited The Big Weave Project at St Augustine’s Church, situated on the city walls, on Monday 24 June. Welcomed by the Rector, Revd Pat Storey, and The Big Weave Team he was invited to try his hand at weaving.

Seven tapestries are being woven during the project. Six of these are being gifted to different organisations and parts of the community in the city after the project has finished. Anyone walking the famous walls of the city will be able to see The Big Weave, part of a worldwide community weaving project. It is taking place in St Augustine’s Halls, finishing on 29 June. It’s free and open to all.

Every visitor gets an opportunity to participate in the creation of a unique piece of community artwork. With the process of weaving reduced to its simplest form anyone can have a go and enjoy the experience.

Revd Pat Storey said, “We are delighted to welcome the Mayor of our city to The Big Weave and really appreciate his willingness to take part in the weaving. The project is a celebration of the fact that our community is made up of many threads, all of which combine to make our city the rich tapestry that it is.”

Sitting on the site of St Columba’s original monastery St Augustine’s shows it is both ancient and modern. Visitors can follow the Big Weave on Facebook (Saint Augustine’s Weave), Twitter (@derryweave), or on the St Augustine’s App.
