Consecration of New Bishop of Meath & Kildare
Following her election in September by the House of Bishops as Bishop of Meath & Kildare the Revd Pat Storey will be episcopally consecrated in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, this afternoon (Saturday), St Andrew’s Day.

An old girl of the Methodist College, Belfast and a modern languages graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, the new bishop was trained in the Church of Ireland Theological College. Ordained for the curacy of St Patrick’s, Ballymena, in 1997, she was from 2000 until 2004 a part time Team Vicar in Glenavy in the Diocese of Connor and a Youth Worker Co–ordinator with the Church of Ireland Youth Department. Since 2004 she has been Rector of the Derry city parish of St Augustine’s. She is currently a member of the Standing Committee of the General Synod and a member of its Select Committee on Human Sexuality.

One of Bishop Storey’s early public engagements, on 9 December, will be to launch With Dignity and Grace, a life of the doyenne of the women’s ordination movement in the Church of Ireland, Daphne Wormell, who died in 2001. In her will Mrs Wormell made provision for a cross to be presented to the first woman bishop in the Church of Ireland and this will be presented to Bishop Storey at the book launch.

Today (Saturday) the Bishop of Cork, as Senior Chaplain, will participate in the Investiture Service of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem in St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, which will be followed by an Investiture Dinner in Trinity College.

Tomorrow (Sunday) the Season of Advent begins and so starts a new liturgical year and a fresh cycle of daily scripture readings. Church of Ireland Publishing has again produced Sunday and Weekday Readings 2014, compiled by the Revd Ken Rue. Tomorrow (Sunday) morning the final address in the Michaelmas term series, ‘Credo: I Believe’, will be given in the context of the Choral Eucharist in the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin. The speaker will be will be broadcaster, Joe Duffy.

On Tuesday evening the Archbishop of Armagh will launch the new illustrated history of the Church of Ireland in St Anne’s cathedral, Belfast, where the guest speaker will be Professor Brian Walker who was the consultant editor of the book. A Dublin launch will be held in Church of Ireland House, Rathmines on Thursday evening at 7pm, in the presence of both Archbishops. The Church of Ireland – An Illustrated History, a 400 page book in full colour, has been published by Booklink.

The Bishops’ Appeal has been greatly encouraged by the response to the disaster in the Philippines by parishes and individuals. Donations will continue to be collected in the coming weeks for immediate needs such as shelter, (tents and tarpaulin) food (rice, mung beans and salt), water (and water purification tablets) and hygiene kits (to prevent the further spread of disease) Once survival needs have been met, later funds will also be directed towards rebuilding homes and trauma counselling. Initial funds have been released through Christian Aid. Subsequent donations will be split between Christian Aid and Tearfund to expand the geographical areas and partners through which relief is being disseminated. Christian Aid’s main focus areas are lloilo and Baybay whilst Tearfund’s main focus area is Samar.
