New Church Music Resource

Following the popularity of its video, Music, Eucharist & You, released in 2012, Church Music Dublin has launched a second video. Essential Hymn Playing is aimed at those who play the organ in church, whether regularly or occasionally. It is available to view on the Church Music Dublin website at http://www.churchmusicdublin.org/Essential-Hymn-Playing or for those seeking to view the video in iOS7 http://youtube.com/watch?v=i8qXMSEY8Vk

Church Music Dublin is an agency of the diocese of Dublin and Glendalough which aims to support music in local churches by providing information and training and by fostering a sense of community among musicians. In particular it runs a three year course in church music skills leading to the award of the Archbishop of Dublin’s Certificate in Church Music, it published a magazine, Soundboard, three times a year, and provides information on a wide range of topics, chiefly through its website.

More information about Church Music Dublin may be had from www.churchmusicdublin.org

This afternoon (Saturday) the Friends of St Canice’s cathedral, Kilkenny, will hold their AGM following Evensong at 3.30pm. The meeting will be followed by a short recital by Malcolm Proud and afternoon tea in the Deanery. The ‘Music in Calary’ series of recitals in Calary parish church, Co.Wicklow continues this evening when Simon Watterson (piano) and Anna Cashell (violin) give the Janet Ashe Memorial Concert while tomorrow (Sunday) there will be a piano masterclass and on Thursday a recital by the Martello Quartet (details and tickets from 01–2818146 or [email protected])

Tomorrow (Sunday) there will be a World War 1 Veterans Ecumenical Service at 2.30pm in St Laurence’s church, Upper Kilmacud Road, Stillorgan, to which all are invited.

In Templeconnor church, Clonmacnoise, there will be a Summer Evening service at 4pm. The final recital in the Chapter Room Concerts series in St Canice’s cathedral, Kilkenny will be given at 4pm by Julia Corry (flute), Matja Gaynor (cello) and Malcolm Proud (harpsichord).

Archbishop Eames will be the special speaker at a service of divine healing in St. Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast on Monday evening 8p.m. He will speak on ‘Inner Peace and Community Peace’. The theme is very relevant because there are often community tensions at this time of year. Archbishop Eames has been chosen to speak because of his considerable involvement in the work of peace and reconciliation since the early years of the Troubles. There will be an opportunity to receive personal prayer for healing and a blessing with oil at the service which will be led by Brother David Jardine, Director of Divine Healing Ministries with the West Church, Bangor, Music Group.

On Thursday the ‘Summer Lunchtimes’ series in St Paul’s church, Glenageary, will feature the ‘Best of Traditional Irish’ from Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann.

The ‘Summer Music in Sandford’ series will continue on Friday with Sinead Ni Mhurchu (soprano) and Niall Kinslee (piano). The recital begins in Sandford parish church, Ranelagh, at 1.10pm.

Those who have not yet purchased a copy of the ‘The Church of Ireland. An Illustrated History’, edited by Claude Costacalde and Brian Walker and published by Booklink which was published late last year may be moved to do so by a recent review. Writing in Books Ireland, John Kirkcaldy concluded that ‘The competition for the best–produced Irish history book for 2014 is over. This is a book that would make any coffee table proud. It is superbly illustrated … and written by various hands in clear, jargon free English’. At €30 it is a steal.
