The new Dean of Raphoe, Dean Arthur Barrett, welcomed and installed a new Canon in St Eunan’s Cathedral, Raphoe on 23rd Setpember 2014, St Eunan’s Day. The new Canon, the Revd John Deane, is rector of the grouped parishes of Ardara, Glencolumbkille, Glenties, Inniskeel & Lettermacaward in west Donegal.

Ordained in 2002, Canon Deane was previously a Non Stipendiary Minister and served in Stranorlar until 2008. That same year he was appointed as Bishop’s Curate in his current parishes. In 2012 he was instituted as Rector.

A large congregation gathered in the Cathedral for a Service of Holy Communion marking the Feast Day of St Eunan. The new Canon was joined by his family, friends and parishioners who came to witness the installation.

The preacher was Canon Harry Trimble, a former rector of the new Canon’s home parish of Laghey. The other members of the Chapter greeted the new Canon and prayed for him as he took his place in his appointed stall.

Canons are non–residential members of the Cathedral Chapter (the ruling body of the Cathedral) appointed by the Bishop as a mark of their contribution in ministry to the work of the Diocese. Rev Canon John Deane will continue his parish ministry.

The Bishop, the Rt Revd Ken Good (pictured above with Canon Deane), said, ‘I commend John for his faithful and resourceful ministry in his parishes and in the wider community and diocese. I warmly congratulate him on his appointment to the chapter of St Eunan’s Cathedral.’
