Lest We Forget – Remembrance Sunday Marked In Tuam

(L to R) Rt Revd Patrick Rooke, Bishop of Tuam Kilalla & Achonry; Sergeant Tom McGough; Cpl Eugene Finnegan; Sergeant Liam Ainsworth; QMS Tommy Gavin, (all Irish United Nations Veterans Association); Mr John A.E. Cooke; Very Revd Alistair Grimason, Dean of Tuam
Remembrance Sunday was marked at St Mary’s Cathedral, Tuam on 9 November 2014. As has become our custom, we were delighted to have members of the Irish United Nations Veterans Association and people from the local community with us to mark this solemn day.
An act of remembrance was made with three wreaths being laid: one in memory of all those who gave their lives in world and local conflicts; one in memory of those who served on United Nations Peace keeping missions; and one specifically in memory of those who served in the Rifle Brigade. This latter is in respect of the only Service Memorial in St Mary’s Cathedral, a plaque dedicated to the memory of one Lt Robert Fairfoot who served in the Rifles in the 19th century and died at Tuam in 1838. The memorial plaque was refurbished through the genrosity of the Connacht Ranger Association based in Boyle, Co Roscommon and is the focus point in the cathedral of the annual Act of Remembrance.
