Mosquito Nets Responsible For 47% Reduction In Malaria

In 2013 Bishop Good in partnership with Bishop’s Appeal and Christian Aid launched the ‘Nets for Nigeria’ appeal in the diocese of Derry and Raphoe. This aimed to raise £100,000 to fund pre–treated mosquito nets which would be given to families in Nigeria to protect them against malaria. The appeal drew to a close in April 2014 when the target was exceeded.
On the 9th December The World Malaria Report 2014 announced the welcome news that there has been a 47% reduction in cases of malaria. This significant improvement is being directly attributed to the increased distribution of mosquito nets and the education of communities as to how to most effectively use the net.
Christian Aid’s Deborah Doherty who leads campaigns like this with churches throughout Ireland expressed the gratitude of many by thanking the diocese for their hard work and partnership which has contributed to the dramatic reduction of those infected.
In reacting to the news, Bishop Ken said ‘We are delighted in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe to hear this good news and to have been able to be involved in helping make a positive contribution to this important cause. Over £117,000 was generously given by parishioners to our NetsWork project and I am delighted that the 23,500 nets which were purchased and distributed in Nigeria have played a part in this global initiative to reduce the devastating consequences of malaria.’
