Living Worship 2015
Living Worship is a course for church musicians, clergy and others involved in parish worship which is organized by Church Music Dublin, an agency of the Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough. First held in 2006, the course has explored the interface between music and other aspects of what happens in church Sunday by Sunday. The next course will be held on Saturdays 17, 24 And 31 January from 10 am until 12.30pm. The venue will be the Mageough Hall, Cowper Road, Rathmines: approaching from Palmerston Road, enter by the 2nd gate on the left and then immediately turn right into the small car park – the hall is next to the Luas stop.
The focus this year is on A Service of the Word and All–age Worship; Morning Prayer; and the Eucharist. Material from Thanks and Praise, the forthcoming supplement to Church Hymnal, will be used at each session. Participants, including clergy, will gain a useful overview of T&P in advance of its publication in May.
The three sessions will be led in turn by the Revd Adrienne Galligan, incoming Rector of Rathfarnham Parish, the Very Revd Gerald Field, Dean of Cashel and Secretary of the Liturgical Advisory Committee, and the Very Revd Sandra Pragnell , Dean of Limerick. They will assisted by parish musicians, Jacqueline Mullen, David O’Shea and Derek Verso.
Aside from the content of the course, ‘Living Worship’ is an enjoyable opportunity to meet other musicians. The coffee break is eagerly looked forward to! Sometimes, rector–and–musician teams are present. Obviously, this is a useful way to build shared vision.
There is a fee €10 per session, payable on the day. Please let the organizers know in advance if you will be there at [email protected] and bring a Book of Common Prayer if you can.
Tomorrow (Sunday) morning RTE will televise a Service of the Word conducted by the Very Revd Dr Philip Knowles with the Athy Musical Society. In St Mary’s church, Baltinglass, the Bishop of Cashel, Ferns & Ossory will institute the Revd Mairt Hanley as Rector of the Baltinglass union of parishes which encompasses Baltinglass, Ballynure, Stratford–on–Slaney and Rathvilly. Mr Hanley, who was ordained in 2003, has been priest–in–charge of Killorglin in Co. Kerry. In St Cronan’s church, Roscrea, the Revd Jane Galbraith will be instituted as Rector of Roscrea, Kyle, Bourney and Corbally. Ms Galbraith, who was ordained in 1995, has been Diocesan Curate in the Tralee & Dingle union of parishes since 2013.
On Friday evening at 7.30pm the Bishop of Cashel, Ferns & Ossory will introduce the Revd Margaret Sykes as part time priest–in–charge of New Ross and Fethard and the service will also mark her new role as Diocesan President of the Mothers’ Union. Later in the same evening, at 8pm, the Archbishop of Dublin will institute the Revd Adrienne Galligan to the incumbency of Rathfarnham in succession to the Revd Ted Woods who has retired. Ms Galligan, who is the Dublin & Glendalough Director of Ordinands, has been Rector of Crumlin & Chapelizod since 2008.
Hilary term, which begins next week in Trinity College, Dublin, will see a new face in the College Chaplaincy. The Revd Hilary Dungan has been appointed interim Church of Ireland Chaplain following the departure of the Revd Darren McCallig who has taken up the post of Chaplain of St Alban’s in Copenhagen in the Diocese of Europe. She will occupy the post from January until June. Ms Dungan retired from the stipendiary ministry in 2011.
