World War I Seminar in St Patrick’s
Next Tuesday evening the Irish Society for Archives and St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, will host, in the cathedral, ‘Hidden Pages from World War I’ – a seminar exploring new archival sources on soldiers and civilians recounted by the curators who discovered them.
Nicky Ralston (National Library), Noelle Dowling (Dublin Diocesan Archivist), Andrew Whiteside (Archivist of Kilkenny College),, Susan Hood (RCB Library) and Andrew Smith (St Patrick’s cathedral) will tell their stories and the proceedings will be chaired by Bryan Dobson from RTE News. There will also be an opportunity to visit the cathedral’s ‘Lives Remembered’ exhibition.
The evening begins with a reception at 7pm followed by the presentations at 7.30pm and all are welcome.
This weekend the Bishop of Sodor and Man, the Rt Revd Robert Patterson, is visiting the diocese of Cashel & Ossory. This morning (Saturday), in St Canice’s Chapter House, Bishop Patterson will launch a new CD prepared by Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise to encourage and resource the singing of a new range of hymns in Irish and this evening (Saturday) he and the Bishop of Cashel & Ossory will take part in a bilingual Eucharist on the eve of St Brigid’s Day, in St Carthage’s cathedral, Lismore. Tomorrow (Sunday) morning Bishop Paterson will preach in Cashel cathedral and in the afternoon at the Patronal Festival Evensong in St Edan’s cathedral, Ferns.
The Bishop of Cashel & Ossory has done much to encourage the use of Irish and follows in the considerable footsteps of the former Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Donald Caird , whose dedication to the language was highlighted in Aohngus Dwane’s biography. Published last year by Columba Press the book has recently been well reviewed in The Church Times by the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church.
Tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 8.10am BBC Radio 4 will broadcast a service from Christ Church cathedral, Lisburn, and the service will be repeated on Radio Ulster at 10.15am.
Heather Hewson will be remembered at Choral Eucharist at Trinity College Chapel on the twentieth anniversary of her death. Heather combined her career at Guinness’s with a pivotal role in the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society. She took early retirement in 1984 to take a degree in music at Trinity where her father George Hewson had been Professor of Music from 1935 until 1962 (and organist of St Patrick’s Cathedral 1920–1960). The address at the service at 10.45 will be given by Eleanor McEvoy who was in her undergraduate year at TCD while the organ will be played by the Director of Chapel Music and another of her under graduate cohort, Dr Kerry Houston.
The Patronal Festival Eucharist will be celebrated in St Brigid’s cathedral, Kildare, at 3.30pm, tomorrow (Sunday) with the Cathedral Singers. The preacher will be the Very Revd Dr Philip Knowles. In St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, there will be a Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten at 3.15pm and at 5pm in Christ Church cathedral the Candlemas Procession will be sung by the Cathedral Choir. The Bicentenary Recital Series continues in St George’s church, Belfast, after Evensong, with an organ recital by Donal McCann.
On Tuesday evening at 7.30pm the Christ Church Past Choristers will hold a table quiz in the cathedral crypt – details from Victor Coe at [email protected]
At the Old Dublin Society meeting on Wednesday evening at 6.30pm in Dublin City Library & Archive, Pearse Street, Dr Raymond Refaussé, from the Representative Church Body Library, will talk about Church of Ireland graveyards in the city of Dublin.
