For Saturday 25 April 2015
CCB Photography Competition
Next Monday at noon is the deadline for submissions for the Central Communications Board photography competition focusing on showing Church of Ireland church life in action. This year, in a change to the annual communications competition (which has traditionally focused on print, web–based and social media), selected entries to this special photography competition will not only win a prize but will also feature prominently on the Church of Ireland website as it is redeveloped this year.
The church life in action photography competition, which is being sponsored by Ecclesiastical Insurance, calls photographers of all ages and experience to take part. The idea is to focus on church activities, rather than buildings – people, not just places. The judges will be looking for images which reveal human interaction within church spaces. Entrants can choose to focus on, for example, worship and prayer, community activities or the church and its people. Entries will be judged on their composition, creativity and impact and must include people.
Entrants may submit one image which should be submitted via email to [email protected] along with the entrant’s name, full contact details, and parish, diocesan, church committee or formally Church of Ireland linked organization connection. Images must be jpegs, and at least 300 dpi and 3 mega–bytes in size but strictly not over 4 mega–bytes, and be submitted with the date the photograph was taken. The judging panel will be independent of the CCB and prizes will be announced at the General Synod in Armagh on 9 May.

In St Fiaac’s church, Clonegal at 7.30pm there will be a Songs of Praise Service in aid of Bunclody Homecare Cancer while in St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, the George Hewson Memorial Recitals continue at 8pm when the recitalist will be Andrew Dewar, Organist at the American Cathedral in Paris.
In the Church of Ireland Theological College a series of Pentecost theological lectures, facilitated by the Revd Dr William Olhausen, Rector of Killiney–Ballybrack, begins on Tuesday. All lectures will begin at 11am and will be followed by lunch at 12.30pm. Further information may be had from David Brown, Lay Training Co–ordinator in CITI at +44 (0) 79190160079.
On Wednesday the lunchtime recital in St Mary’s cathedral Limerick will feature music by Hummel, Ibert and Mozart played by the Syrinx Wind Trio. In the evening at 8pm St. Coman’s Church, Roscommon, will hold a Special Ecumenical Service to celebrate the launch of the Roscommon Lamb Festival. The event is “Thanksgiving for the flocks of the fields” and will include a creative variety of music, art, poetry and prose highlighting the biblical link between Christ as Shepherd and ourselves as “ the sheep of His hand”. The service will be led by the Rector, Canon Liz McElhinney, Mgr Travers and Fr Mc Loughlin.
In Rathmines Town Hall, on Thursday evening at 8pm, the Rathmines, Ranelagh & Rathgar Historical Society will host an illustrated talk by Henry Fairbrother on ‘Mount Jerome – A Protestant Cemetery’.
