New Hymnal Supplement Launch

The Church of Ireland’s new hymnal supplement, Thanks and Praise, will be launched in St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, next Friday at 6.30pm.

The new supplement contains some 200 hymns, songs and liturgical settings reflecting the best of church music to emerge since the publication of the fifth edition of the Church Hymnal in 2000.

The selection, which is authorised by the General Synod, includes many hymns and songs, plus new settings for the Eucharist, short songs and chants – alleluias, kyries, blessings etc. – a number of items in the Irish language, music from the world church and some completely new compositions and arrangements. Two years in preparation, the selection has been overseen by a team of parish and cathedral musicians and clergy and has been tested in local parishes.

The Church is keen to welcome all those who participated in the project to the service and also a reception afterwards. If you plan to attend, please email Mrs Janet Maxwell ([email protected]).

Tomorrow (Sunday) the Bishop of Cork will represent the Church of Ireland at the consecration of the Very Revd Dr Johan Dalman who is to be the new Bishop of Strangnas in the Church of Sweden.

At 3.30pm in St Anne’s cathedral, Belfast, the Bishop of Derry & Raphoe will be the preacher when Cameron Jones (Carrickfergus), Julie Bell (Christ Church, Lisburn) and Philip Benson (Larne) are ordained to the priesthood to serve in the Diocese of Connor, while at the same time in Farahy church, Co. Cork, the Annual Elizabeth Bowen Commemoration Service will be held. The service will be conducted by the Very Revd Dr Robert MacCarthy and the address will be given by Senator Sean Barrett.

The Very Revd Dr Philip Knowles and the Donagh Singers will present a ‘Songs of Praise’ service in Christ Church, Ballybay, Co. Monaghan, tomorrow (Sunday) at 3.30pm. On Wednesday evening Dr Knowles will be the preacher at the Meath & Kildare Mothers’ Union Festival Service in St Brigid’s cathedral, Kildare, and on Friday evening he will join Doreen Kimberley and the Meath Diocesan Choir for an ‘Evening of Music and Song’ in St Mary’s church, Navan.

Next Wednesday is the 10th anniversary of the death of the Very Revd John Paterson whose ministry in parish life, as Dean of Kildare and Dean of Christ Church, Dublin, and in the General Synod, was marked by high standards, strong convictions and utter integrity.

Another tranche of the well–received Maynooth Studies in Local History will be launched next Thursday evening. Among this year’s titles will be Gowran, Co. Kilkenny, 1190–1610: custom and conflict in a baronial town which has been written by the Honorary Secretary of the Church of Ireland Historical Society, the Revd Dr Adrian Empey. The Maynooth Studies in Local History are published by Four Courts Press (www.fourcourtspress.ie).

Sandford parish church, Ranelagh, held a series of short choral services on Friday evenings during July, directed by David O’Shea. These services will continue in September and October and next Friday there will be a Service of Compline at 6pm.

On Saturday 12 September the Dioceses of Dublin & Glendalough will hold a forum in the High School, Rathgar, which will allow members of the dioceses to shape the themes for the ‘Come & C’ initiative which will be issued in 2016. A cleric and four parishioners from each parish have been invited and, as space is limited, responses to the invitation should be made to the Archbishop’s secretary at [email protected]
