Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’

Young people embracing Irish

Protestant secondary schools around the country, from Ashton School in Cork to Sligo Grammar School to Wesley College in Dublin, along with Wallace High School in Lisburn, Co. Antrim, are supporting the Irish language and the work of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise.

There was a wide range of activities and great imagination shown in the applications submitted to the Bedell Competition – a competition organised by Cumann Gaelach an hEaglaise (The Irish Guild of the Church) to encourage the greater use of the Irish language among young people in the Church of Ireland and, in particular, post–primary Protestant schools.

Ashton School, Cork, won first place this year and Maire Roycroft, on behalf of the Cumann, presented the Bedell Cup a cheque for €250 to the school. Sligo Grammar School came second. The Rev Doris Clements presented the prize to the school and Wesley College came third this year.

Each school submitted a newsletter detailing the activities they had organised during Seachtain na Gaeilge and the entries contained reports and photographs of events, art competitions, céilí, and demonstrated great creativity, energy, participation and commitment by teachers and pupils alike. Ashton School also coordinated with a local parish to participate in an Irish language service for St. Patrick’s Day.

The Bedell Competition will run during Seachtain na Gaeilge 2016. Details will be sent to the schools shortly.

This (Saturday) afternoon, at 2pm, the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Michael Jackson, and the Dean of Christ Church, the Very Revd Dermot Dunne, will lead an act of worship for the Khachkar Dedication Service – the Armenian Memorial – in Christ Church cathedral, which has been organized by Dr Paul Manook of the Armenian Community in Ireland.

Tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 11am the Archbishop of Dublin will celebrate the Eucharist in St Stephen’s church, Lower Mount Street, Dublin. In the evening, in St George’s church, Belfast, there will be a Carol Service in Irish at 5pm which will feature the Choir of Wallace High School, Lisburn, who sang at the St George’s Harvest Festival earlier this year.

On Monday the Bishop of Meath & Kildare, the Most Revd Pat Storey, will lead an Advent Reflection in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute which will hold its Advent Carol Service in Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines, on Wednesday evening when the Archbishop of Dublin will preside.

The Representative Church Body will meet in Church of Ireland House, Dublin, for the final time this year on Wednesday. The sixty member RCB meets four times each year with its business between these meetings conducted by a smaller fourteen member Executive Committee.

In Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, on Tuesday there will be a lunchtime carol service in aid of Peata Therapy Dogs, and on Wednesday and Thursday evenings there will be Carols by Candlelight in Christ Church with the Cathedral Choir.

On Saturday 12 December the Annual Ecumenical Carol Singing on the steps of the Mansion House, Dawson Street, Dublin, (organised by the Diocesan Council for Mission and the Archdiocese Office for Evangelisation & Ecumenism) will take place at 2.30 pm. The singing will be led by Crumlin Community Choir directed by Gerry Noonan, along with members of the Tony Cavanagh Group. Seasonal readings will be given by The Lord Mayor, Eileen Dunne (RTE), Ger Brennan (former Dublin Inter–County Player and All Ireland Winner) and Iva Beranek (Church’s Ministry of Healing). Everyone is invited to come and join in the singing of favourite carols and seasonal songs. This all takes place beside the Live Animal Crib.
