Human Sexuality Guide Launched

The Church of Ireland’s Select Committee on Human Sexuality in the Context of Christian Belief will launch a Guide to the Conversation in Dublin and Belfast next Monday and Tuesday. The new resource is designed to assist members of the Church in the ongoing process of listening, learning and dialogue on this issue. The Guide, which will outline the Church’s listening process to date along with contextual essays and contributions from different viewpoints, will also be accompanied by Bible studies and an executive summary.

The Guide will be launched by the Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Richard Clarke, at Church of Ireland House, Rathmines, Dublin, on Monday at 4pm and in the Library of St Anne’s cathedral, Belfast, on Tuesday at 4pm. The Very Revd John Mann, Chairman of the Select Committee, will also speak at the launch events.

Copies of the Guide may be purchased through the on–line bookshop on the Church of Ireland website or from Church of Ireland House.

Church Music Dublin’s popular short course in music, liturgy and worship, Living Worship 2016, begins today (Saturday) and runs for three consecutive Saturdays from 10am until 1pm. The course has something for everyone – musicians, worship leaders, clergy and others with pastoral responsibility – all who have an interest in the music of worship. Practical music skills are not required to take part. Today, in the Mageough Hall, Cowper Road, Rathmines, the Bishop of Down & Dromore will discuss ways of using music appropriately in the parish church during Holy Week and on Easter Day, using material from his worship guide Week of All Weeks.

On Saturday, 23 January, in the Mageough, Archdeacon Ricky Rountree will look at options for the use of music at the Eucharist when it includes the liturgy of Holy Baptism. Finally, on Saturday, 30 January, in Sandford Church, international concert organist Gerard Brooks will direct a practical workshop (partly at the organ console) on service accompaniment, particularly showing how to accompany worship songs. He will use examples from the hymnal supplement Thanks & Praise. The course costs €10 per session (payable on the day). To book, send an email to [email protected]

Tomorrow (Sunday) the Trinity College Chapel Choir, directed by Andrew Burrows, will sing at the Eucharist in St Canice’s cathedral, Kilkenny.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on Monday and the Bishop of Clogher, Chairman of the Commission for Christian Unity and Dialogue, has commended the use of the resources provided by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI). In Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, on Friday at 8pm, there will be an interdenominational service in Irish organized by Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise and Pobal an Aifrinn at which the preacher will be Fr Clement Mac Manuis C.Ss.P.

The Clogher Clerical Association will meet in Enniskillen on Thursday morning when the Bishop of Down & Dromore will discuss ‘Funerals and Pastoral Liturgy’. In the evening the 150th anniversary of Alexandra College will be celebrated at Evensong in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, where the preacher will be the Bishop of Copenhagen, the Rt Revd Peter Skov–Jakobsen.

On Friday evening at 7.30pm the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne & Ross will host a lecture in the Aula Maxima of UCC as part of its ‘Remembering 1916’ programme. Professor Diarmaid Ferriter will speak on ‘1916: New Perspectives; Old Rows’.
