Tionscadal Logainmneacha na bParóistí / Parish Placenames Project

Bhí seoladh Tionscadal Logainmneacha na bParóistí i dTeampall Mhuire, Ceatharlach, Dé Sathairn, 2 Aibreán 2016 i ndiaidh Cheiliúradh na hEocairiste. mar chuid den Fhéile Phan–Cheilteach.

Tionscadal uaillmhianach é Tionscadal Logainmneacha na bParóistí chun liostáil dátheangach a dhéanamh ar pharóistí uile Eaglais na hÉireann.   A bhuíochas do Chomhlacht Ionadaíoch na hEaglaise (CIhE) ionchorprófar an liostáil dátheangach – maille le mínithe ar théarmaí Gaeilge –  isteach in Eolaí Eaglais na hÉireann.

Cuirfear an obair seo i gcríoch ar bhealach céimnithe, deoise i ndiaidh deoise.   Tá sé i gceist go mbeadh an liostáil mar acmhainn tagartha ag paróistí ar mian leo an leagan Gaeilge d’ainm an pharóiste a úsáid ar an idirlíon, ar chlár fógraí, i nuachtlitreacha etc.  Déanfar an chéad tástáil den tionscadal ar Dheoisí Chaisil, Fhearna agus Osraí agus tá an chéad dréacht comhairliúcháin ar fail ar www.gaeleaglais.ie    Féachtar air mar chéad–iarracht mheasartha, thrialach agus fáilteofar roimh aiseolas.

Dúirt an Fíor–Oirmhinneach Michael Burrows, Easpag Dheoisí Chaisil, Fhearna agus Osraí: “Tús le tionscadal uaillmhianach agus fíorluachmhar í an ócáid seo.  De réir mar a fhaighimid tuiscint níos fear ar ár logainmneacha, maille lena ndraíocht is a n?áille,gheobhaimid tuiscint níos fearr ar ár bpréamhacha mar phobail sheasmhacha, bríomhara  creidimh.   Is minic a shnaidhmeann eolas ar logainmneacha  sinne leosan a chéad–bhunaigh teampall i gceantar áirithe agus, ar an dóigh sin,  cabhraíonn sé linn lorg na naomh a leanúint.”

Dúirt Dáithí Ó Maolchoille, Cathaoirleach an Chumainn: “Ag foghlaim dúinn ón Eaglais sa Bhreatain Bheag, a spreag scéim mar seo i 2008, samhlaíonn Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise go dtiocfaidh fás nádúrtha faoi Thionscadal Logainmneacha na bParóistí agus go gcuirfidh sé le stair onórach Eaglais na hÉireann i gcaomhnú is i gcur chun cinn na Gaeilge.  Tugann sé teachtaireacht rí–fheiceálach faoi éagsúlacht teanga agus freagraíonn sé don oscailteacht atá le sonrú san Eaglais faoi láthair i leith na Gaeilge.”

The launch of the Parish Placenames Project took place at St. Mary’s Church, Carlow on Saturday, 2 April 2016 after the celebration of the Eucharist, as part of the Pan–Celtic Festival.

The Parish Placenames Project is an ambitious project to create a bilingual listing of all of parishes of the Church of Ireland.  Through the cooperation of the Representative Church Body (RCB) the bilingual listing – with explanations of the Irish terms – will be incorporated into the Church of Ireland Directory.

The work will be carried out in a staged process, on a diocese by diocese basis.  It is intended that the listing will act as a resource for parishes which may like to include the Irish name of the parish on the website, notice–board, newsletter, etc.  The first ‘testing ground’ for this project is the Diocese of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory and the first consultation lists are available on www.gaeleaglais.ie.   It is intended as a modest first attempt and feedback in encouraged. 

The Right Rev Michael Burrows, Diocese of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory, said, “This event marks the beginning of an ambitious and invaluable project. As we develop a better understanding of our place names with all their fascination and beauty, we will have a richer sense of our origins as resilient and vibrant communities of faith. Such knowledge of place names often connects us to those who originally established the church in a particular area, and thus helps us to walk more closely in the footsteps of the saints.”

Dáithí Ó Maolchoille, Chair of the Cumann, said, “Learning from the Church in Wales, which encouraged such a scheme in 2008, the Cumann envisages that the Parish Placenames Project will grow organically and enhance the honourable history of the Church of Ireland in preserving and promoting the Irish language.  It sends out a very visible message of language diversity, and responds to the current openness to the Irish language in the Church.”
