New Issue of Search

The autumn of the Church of Ireland journal, Search, edited by the Revd Dr Virginia Kennerley, will appear next week and as well as being on sale at the Dublin Diocesan Synod will be available, as usual, from the Sunday School RE Resource Centre, Holy Trinity Church, Church Avenue, Rathmines, Dublin 6.

This issue concentrates on education matters throughout Ireland. It carries articles from the Bishop of Cork and Professor Aine Hyland on school patronage, and from the Bishop of Meath & Kildare on denominational education. The Revd Ian Ellis, Secretary to the Board of Education (N.I.) considers integrated education in the north, Michael Johnston, Chairman of the Board of Management of Newpark School, Dublin, writes on ?Educate Together and the C.of.I, and Katherine Crampton, who teaches RE in the King?s Hospital, reflects on the impact of the new RE syllabus.

In addition, there are two important contributions on chaplaincy work, The Revd Gillian Wharton, a former chaplain in Rathdown School, considers the issue at secondary level while the Revd Dr Alan McCormack, Chaplain in Trinity College, Dublin, writes on ?Chaplaincy in the Late Modern University?.

Today (Saturday) the Kilmore, Elphin & Ardagh Diocesan Synod will be held in the Shannon Keys West Hotel, Roosky. In the Church of Ireland College of Education, Upper Rathmines Road, at 3.30 pm, Trevor Sargent TD, will launch A Gaelic Experiment. The Preparatory System 1926-1961 and Colaiste Mobh. This new book, by Dr Valerie Jones, recalls the state?s early efforts to gaelicise education and college?s role in protestant survival in the twenty-six counties.

Tomorrow (Sunday) morning in Sligo the Bishop of Kilmore will dedicate a memorial plaque to those who have faithfully served Calry parish. The choir of King?s College School, Wimbledon, will sing at the Harvest Festival Eucharist in Belfast Cathedral while, in the afternoon, the choir of St Brigid?s Church, Stillorgan will sing at the Harvest Thanksgiving Service in Mullagh Church, Co. Cavan, where the rector is the Revd Alan Matchett, formerly curate in Stillorgan. At Evensong in Belfast Cathedral there will be a special service to mark the centenary of the Mission to Seafarers in Belfast port where the chaplain is Canon Douglas Goddard. The Bishop of St Andrew?s, the Rt Revd David Chillingworth, formerly Archdeacon of Dromore, will preach.

On Monday evening in the Culloden Hotel, Belfast the final question and answer session on ?The Church & the Media?, which is part of the Church of Ireland Gazette 150th anniversary celebrations, will be held.

The Archbishop of Dublin will preside at the Dublin & Glendalough Diocesan Synod on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in Taney Parish Centre, while from Thursday until the following Saturday the Bishop of Cork will preside at the Diocesan Clergy Conference in Ballylickey where the guest speaker will be Rabbi Julia Neuberger.
