Archdeacon of Derry, Ven. Robert Miller; Bishop Ken Good; Rev Terence P. Kerr (new Incumbent); Diocesan Registrar, Canon David Crooks; and Canon Raymond Stewart, Rural Dean, at Rev Kerr’s Institution in St Lurach’s Church, Maghera, on Friday 11th November.

Rev Terence P. Kerr has been instituted as Incumbent of the Grouped Parishes of Maghera and Killelagh by the Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Rt Rev Ken Good.

The service took place on Friday 11th November in St Lurach’s Church in Maghera and representatives of all the main Christian churches locally were present for the Service. Bishop Good was assisted by the Diocesan Registrar, Canon David Crooks, and the Rural Dean, Canon Raymond Stewart. The preacher was a former Rector of Maghera & Killelagh, Ven Robert Miller, who is now the Archdeacon of Derry.

Among those present to see Rev Kerr being instituted were his wife Carol and two of their three sons, Mike and Stephen. The couple’s eldest son, Andrew, is travelling in South–East Asia and was unable to attend. Also in the congregation was a local lady who was watching her seventh institution in St Lurach’s Church.

After the service, there were refreshments in the adjoining Lurach Centre. Guests, including local MLA Sandra Overend, were addressed by parish reader Malcolm Young, who described Rev Kerr as “the right man in the right place at the right time”.

Rev Kerr said his period as Priest–in–Charge in the parishes was “a bit like being engaged to be married. You do a few months or years, and then this is a bit like my wedding day.” The new Incumbent vowed to “love, cherish, honour and care” for his parishioners for as long as he is their Rector.
