Church leaders welcome publication by the Parades Commission
STATEMENT BY THE FOUR CHURCH LEADERS
?As leaders of the four main Churches in Northern Ireland we welcome the publication this morning by the Parades Commission of ?Parading in a peaceful Northern Ireland.?
While recognising the depth of genuine feeling on both sides of the parades issue we are convinced that no lasting solution to this problem is possible without dialogue. The example of Jesus engaging in dialogue irrespective of the other person?s background or perceived position should encourage us to move forward in the same way. In the situation of parading, dialogue must involve those who have a right to parade and those who have a right to protest.
We believe there is no substitute for honest, open and fair exchange of views between both sides and that dialogue is the only real way forward. This society needs such dialogue as the best way to create understanding, build trust and allay fears. Willingness to talk and explain a case must be matched by a genuine willingness to listen. Only then can this contentious issue be removed once and for all from our society.?
