Next Thursday evening in the crypt of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, Professor Alan Ford, from the Department of Theology and Religious Studies in Nottingham University, will launch a book of essay entitled Two Thousand Years of Christianity and Ireland.

The origins of these essays lie in a series of lunchtime lectures given in the cathedral in 2001 and 2002 as part of Christ Church?s continuing outreach programme. The subject matter covers a long time span from the birth of Christianity to the Irish Church in the 20th and 21st centuries, stopping along the way to examine topics such as the Christianization of the Dublin Vikings, the mendicant orders in Ireland, and the ascendancy and the penal laws. The contributors include theologians Sean Freyne and Andrew Pierce, historians Marie Therese Flanagan, Colm Lennon and James Kelly, and DCU President, Ferdinand von Prondzynski.

The volume has been edited by Canon John Bartlett and Stuart Kinsella and has been published by Columba Press.

One of the contributors to Two Thousand years of Christianity, Professor Sean Freyne, is the focus for a book of essay, also published by Columba, which were commissioned to mark his 75th birthday in 2005. Edited by two of Freyne?s former colleagues in Trinity College, Dublin, Andrew Mayes and Werner Jeanrond, Recognising the Margins deals with biblical, theological, cultural and ethical themes and includes contributions from distinguished figures such as Martin Hengel, James Mackey, and Enda McDonough.

Another important Columba Press publication is Equipping the Saints. Ordination in Anglicanism Today, edited by Ronald Dowling and David Holeton. This volume carries the papers from the sixth International Anglican Liturgical Consultation in Berkeley, California in 2001 and includes papers by distinguished liturgists such as Paul Bradshaw, Colin Buchanan and Louis Weil. The Church of Ireland dimension is dealt with by Canon Brian Mayne , editor of the Book of Common Prayer, who was largely responsible for finding a publisher for these most significant papers.

Today (Saturday) the Bishop of Tuam, Chaplain of the Mothers? Union, will conduct a retreat for members of the MU in the Dioceses of Down and Dromore while in Dublin the Irish Association of Changeringers will hold their festival in Christ Church Cathedral.

Tomorrow (Sunday) the services in St Patrick?s Cathedral, Dublin, will be sung by the Concentio Chamber Choir from Queen?s University, Belfast, while in the Chapel of Trinity College the preacher at the Sung Eucharist will be the Archdeacon of Down, the Ven. Gregor McCamley.

The parishes of Donneybrook and Irishtown will host a triple celebration of Bible Sunday, Crosslinks Day and Mission Sunday. focusing on mission link partners Richard and Baianca Reeve in Mozambique. Following the 11 am service in Irishtown there will be presentations on Mozambique and Crosslinks worldwide at which the speaker will be the Deputy CEO OF Crosslinks, Janet Horsman.

Those who are interested in church music in the Dublin area should visit the website of the Dublin & Glendalough Church Music Committee www.churchmusicdublin.org.
The site is being constantly developed and welcomes brief details of forthcoming events. One such will be Living Liturgy 2007 ? four Saturday morning seminars in January and February 2007 aimed at those who wish to have a fuller understanding of the place of music in Christian worship. The structure of the liturgy will be examined, there will be a particular focus on one season of the church?s year, and the final session will be held in a church which has been re-modelled to reflect current insights into how worship should be presented.
