'The Hard Gospel' challenges synods
?THE HARD GOSPEL? CHALLENGES SYNODS
All 12 diocesan synods of the Church of Ireland have now discussed the findings of a scoping study report, 'The Hard Gospel', commissioned by the church?s Sectarianism Education Project (SEP) produced by Dr Gareth Higgins.
The report aims to help congregations think positively about issues of difference and how they can respond to them positively. It identifies a wide range of issues that concern many members of the Church of Ireland and encourages congregations to explore how the church can improve its response to sectarianism.
The general feedback has been positive with synods identifying specific issues in their areas. Parishes are being invited to take practical steps in dealing with difference both within the church and in the wider community.
The SEP is also considering a comprehensive strategy to equip church members to challenge sectarianism and other negative forms of dealing with difference as well as suggesting positive action in promoting better community relations and reconciliation.
As a first step SEP is to produce a series of Bible Studies for use in Lent or during the coming year by Rev Doug Baker and Dr Cecilia Clegg, advisors to the SEP. The Bible studies will focus on three major themes ??Dealing with difference?, ?Identity: Freedom or Fetter? and ?Welcoming the stranger?.
