On 27 November, Advent Sunday, at the end of the Advent Carol service in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick, Bishop Kenneth paid tribute to Peggy Carey, a stalwart of St. Mary’s Cathedral for most of her life.

Peggy was presented with a large floral bouquet and a gift voucher from Limerick City Parish.

In addition, in recognition of Peggy’s 77 years of unbroken service to St. Mary’s Cathedral choir, Peter Barley (choir director and organist) on behalf of the choir, presented Peggy with a framed photo of the choir, in an engraved silver frame. Peggy has sung in the St. Mary’s Cathedral choir since the age of 5 years!

Peggy has been honorary secretary of Limerick City Parish for most of her adult life, and honorary secretary of the Select Vestry for many years. She acts as secretary of the Leamy Board of Education and is extremely helpful and supportive to those who need grants. She is also the honorary cathedral secretary, and in that role she has an amazing, encyclopedic memory for people and dates, addresses and telephone numbers – a veritable mine of helpful information.

She also sits on the committee of Limerick Protestant Aid Society and attends all their meetings. She is treasurer of The Companions of St. Mary’s Cathedral music, and a member of the Friends of the Cathedral. Peggy is also long–time editor of the weekly Newsletter and is treasurer of the Restoration Projects Committee (RPC).

Peggy has supported the Wednesday lunch–time concerts since their inception in 2004, looking after the money baskets, counting the takings and lodging the money to The Companions of St. Mary’s Cathedral music account, as well as welcoming and looking after all who attend.

Peggy’s work is always meticulous and she is never prepared to compromise on her standard of work, maintaining that she was trained in the ‘old school’.

In addition to all of the above, Peggy helps innumerable people along the way, with her countless acts of kindness and thoughtfulness – supporting, encouraging and assisting in any way she can. She is an excellent ambassador for the cathedral, going out of her way to help all those who cross her path.

In all, “I have survived 9 bishops and 6 Deans!” comments Peggy wryly.
