The Church Education Society for Ireland

Over the last 10 years or so, the Church Education Society has transformed itself into a significant supporter of religious education activities in Church of Ireland National Schools and of Church of Ireland teachers pursuing education management qualifications.

The Annual Report for the year ended 31 December 2005, which was recently approved at the Society?s AGM reported that:

- 54 small schools received grants totalling almost ?26000 towards the purchase of non-consumable resources like religious education books, computer equipment and musical equipment

- Almost ?14500 was given to the Church of Ireland Board of Education to support the development of Follow Me and provide Teacher?s Books to all participating schools. The Society has generously supported this programme since 2001

- Over ?9500 was granted in bursaries for Church of Ireland teachers following post graduate courses in educational management. This scheme has now proved so popular that the Society has had to establish a limit on its support for such students

- ?600 was provided to the Church of Ireland College of Education to purchase religious education books for first year students

- The Past Students Association of the Church of Ireland College of Education was granted over ?2300 for its annual conference

- Almost ?7000 was given in one-off grants for specific purposes relating to the main aims of the Society.

The Church Education Society was established in 1839 and aims to support Church of Ireland children in national schools under sole or joint Church of Ireland patronage by making grants available in various ways. The Society is regulated by a Deed of Trust and governed by an elected executive committee. The Society receives many requests for funding each year and tries to support as many as possible provided finance is available and the request itself falls within the terms of the Society?s Deed of Trust.
