Dean of St Patrick's welcomes announcement of funding for Cathedral conservation
Speaking last night at the launch of the St Patrick?s Cathedral Conservation Plan, the Dean of St Patrick?s, the Very Revd Robert MacCarthy, warmly welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr Dick Roche TD that his Department will provide ?500,000 for conservation work carried out during 2006.
The Dean said ?St Patrick?s Cathedral has a unique heritage as a centre of Christian worship for nearly a millennium. It has attracted generations of people from inside and outside Ireland for its beautiful architecture, its liturgy and its proud history of choral music.
We are most grateful for the commitment made by the Minister today, which not only helps to preserve St Patrick?s for the benefit of future generations, but also serves as recognition by him of the effort already undertaken by the Cathedral Chapter and the Board. We hope to do more in the future and we look forward to further support.?
The funding provided by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government through the Heritage Council, will go towards the erection of fire protection screens in the roof space and the restoration of the stained glass west window.
