Archbishop of Dublin to Visit Hong Kong

The Archbishop of Dublin and Mrs Neill will be in Hong Kong next Monday to attend the enthronement of the Rt Revd Paul Kwong as Bishop of Hong Kong. The visit will build on links which have been established between the Church of Ireland Theological College and the Provincial College in Hong Kong which will facilitate the exchange of ordinands for short periods. The first exchange student, Kwok Che Chin, has already arrived in Braemor Park for a month long placement during which she will visit a number of Irish parishes.

The Chaplain of Trinity College, Dublin, Dr Alan McCormack will also attend the ceremony as a representative of the Dublin University Far Eastern Mission which has played an important role in developing these links between the Church of Ireland and the Church in Hong Kong. Tomorrow (Sunday) Dr McCormack will preach in St John?s Cathedral, Hong Kong, at the invitation if the Dean, the Very Revd Andrew Chan.

Tomorrow morning (Sunday) the preacher at the Sung Eucharist in the Chapel of Trinity College will be Dr Zuleika Rodgers who is a Lecturer in Jewish Studies in Trinity. She will open the Hilary term lecture sermon series with a description of ?The People? within the Jewish traditions. In St Anne?s Cathedral, Belfast, the preacher at the Choral Eucharist will be the Rt Revd Michael Doe, General Secretary of the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel which is one of the Anglican Communion?s major world wide mission agencies. At Evensong, in St Patrick?s Cathedral, Dublin the Revd Gregory Dunstan, Rector of St Matthew, Belfast, will be installed as Prebendary of Swords, and the Vicar of St Bartholomew, Dublin, the Revd Michael Thompson, will be installed as Succentor. The preacher will be Canon John Crawford.

On Wednesday evening at 7.30 pm in the Church of Ireland Theological College Dr Gareth Higgins, writer, researcher and Church of Ireland Gazette columnist, will give a public lecture entitled ?Why the Church must fail or die?. Admission is free.

Meanwhile at 8 pm on Wednesday in the Church of the Assumption, Milltown, Dublin, the RSCM Ireland will host an evening workshop for cantors. Although usually associated with the Roman Catholic liturgy the use of cantors has been spreading to other churches and especially those with few or no choral resources as the use of cantors has proved to be a good way to teach new music to congregations and to give them the confidence to sing. The workshop will explore the role and techniques of the cantor and will look at new music for choirs and congregations. The leaders will be Fr Pat O?Donoghue, Director of the Dublin Archdiocesan Liturgical Centre, John O?Keefe, Lecturer in Music in NUI Maynooth, and Aine Mulvey, a singing teacher and cantor. Details may be had from Peter Parshall at +353 (0)1-671 2426

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be inaugurated on Thursday. At 8 pm there will be a service of Vespers in the Romanian Orthodox Church, Christ Church, Leeson Park, at which the speaker will be the Irish born Bishop Brian Farrell, Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. On Friday evening at 8 pm there will an Interdenominational Service of Prayer and Music in Irish, under the auspices of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise and Pobal an Aifrinn, in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, where the preacher will be the Revd Darren McCallig, Curate of Monkstown.
