The Church of Ireland and Irish
Tomorrow morning (Sunday) there will be a celebration of the Eucharist in Irish in the Chapel of the Church of Ireland College of Education, Upper Rathmines Road, Dublin, at 8.30 am. This is part of a programme of worship in Irish which is organized by Cuman Galeach Na hEaglaise (The Irish Guild of the Church). The Eucharist is celebrated in the College of Education Chapel every second Sunday while on every fourth Sunday there is a celebration in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, at 5 pm.
In addition, the Guild organizes an ecumenical service during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and a St Patrick?s Day Eucharist in St Patrick?s Cathedral. Later in the year, on Saturday 2 June, the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral will sing Choral Evensong in Irish which will include a new motet funded by the Guild.
Cuman Gaelach Na hEaglaise is also responsible for the provision of liturgical publications in Irish, most recently with the publication of Leabhar na hUtnai Coitinne 2004 (Book of Common Prayer 2004) which is the core liturgical document for the Church of Ireland.
The Guild is always pleased to welcome new members and especially to hear from clergy who can conduct services in Irish. Details of membership may be had from the Hon Secretary, Leslie Bryan, 8 Glencairn, Harbour Road, Dalkey, Co. Dublin.
Another aspect of the Church of Ireland?s involvement with the Irish language is a theme of a recent book by Dr Valerie Jones, former teacher, lecturer in the College of Education, and Dublin & Glendalough Diocesan Communications Officer. A Gaelic Experiment. The Preparatory System 1926-1961 and Colaiste Moibhi tells the story of the preparatory system, established in 1926, which, through the medium of seven residential colleges, enabled teachers to become proficient in Irish. An important part of the book is the story of the protestant college, Colaiste Moibhi, from its establishment in Glasnevin in 1927 until its closure in 1995, by which time it was sharing the campus in Rathmines with the College of Education. A Gaelic Experiment has been published by the Woodfield Press
Tomorrow (Sunday) RTE will broadcast morning service from St Mary?s parish church, Dungarvan, which is part of the Lismore group of parishes. The service will be led by the Dean of Lismore, the Very Revd William Beare, and the preacher will be the Revd Isobel Jackson. In the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin, the preacher at the Sung Eucharist will be the Very Revd Dr Simon Gaine OP, Prior of Blackfriars in Oxford, who will speak on ?The Idea of the People in the Augustinian Tradition?. The Archbishop of Dublin will conduct a confirmation service in Delgany as will the Bishop of Cork in St Colman?s Cathederal, Cloyne, where, among the candidates will be his two sons.
On Monday evening in Overseas House, Belgrave Road, Rathmines, the Crosslinks missionary society will have a special evening with Karen Salmon who has been a mission partner in Ethiopia since 1993. She is currently working in N.E. Ethiopia teaching HIV/AIDS awareness to young people.
In Christ Church Cathedral on Thursday at lunchtime the Archbishop of Dublin will be the celebrant at a Eucharist which will include the commissioning of the Revd Obinna Ulogwara as diocesan chaplain to the international community. In the evening the Annual Service and AGM of the Dublin University Far Eastern Mission will be held in Trinity College where the preacher will be the outgoing chairman, the Revd Dr Alan McCormack.
