Spanish bishop guest of Clogher diocese
The Right Reverend Dr. Carlos López Lozano, Bishop in Madrid and Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Europe, will be the guest of Clogher Diocese as part of the special events organised to celebrate St Macartan?s Day. His visit begins with a number of public lectures on the topic of ?Christianity and the Spanish Civil War?. The first lecture will be in association with Ardess Historical Society in Ardess Hall, Kesh, on Thursday, 22 March 2007 at 8.00pm. The following evening 23 March he will be speaking in association with the Clogher Historical Society in The Market House, Monaghan at 7.45pm. Both these lectures are free and open to the general public.
He will also be visiting Lack Primary School and Monaghan Collegiate during his time in the diocese. His visit to Lack will be of special interest due to the historical link between Clogher Diocese and the Diocese of Spain. In the beginning of the 20th century Bishop Stack, who prior to his appointment as Bishop of Clogher was rector of Colaghty Parish, Lack (Co Fermanagh). Bishop Stack was one of the three Bishops from Ireland who consecrated the first Bishop of Spain.
This visit is coordinated as part of the Macartan 1500 Project celebrating 1500 years since the death of the Diocese?s patron saint - St Macartan and is part financed by the European Union through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation and managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Northern Ireland Rural Development Council (RDC).
The weekend following Bishop López Lozano?s visit is another event supported by the Macartan 1500 Project. Sunday 1st April is ?Bruckner?s Requiem in D Minor? performed by Fermanagh Choral Society?s and featuring soloists from the National Chamber Choir, Western Sinfonia and conducted by Don Swain. This will take place in St Michael?s Church, Enniskillen, at 8.00pm with complimentary entry to celebrate 1500 years since St Macartan.
