St Ann's clergy sit-out for charity on Dublin's Dawson Street

ST ANN'S CLERGY SIT-OUT FOR CHARITY ON DUBLIN'S DAWSON STREET

Since Friday 17 December Canon Tom Haskins, Vicar of St Ann's Church Dawson Street has been sitting outside the church collecting for charity. The sit-out from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm daily will continue until Christmas Eve, Friday 24 December

Charities to benefit include the St Vincent de Paul Society and the Bishops Appeal for Third World Aid and Development.

Canon Haskins is assisted by the Revd Joyce Rankin, curate of St Ann's & St Stephens.

Canon Haskins comments, I got this idea from St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast where for over twenty years it has been customary for the Dean to sit out in all weathers and over the years he has collected large sums of money for charity. Because of the heavy black clerical cloak he wore he became known as the Black Santa but this is not politically correct these days.

Two years ago when I first came to St Ann's I started the sit-out and we raised Euro 10,000. Last year we raised Euro 15,000 and this year were giving it another go. The choir will be singing some of the time on Christmas Eve and we hope to put across the real message of Christmas in this way.
