Search Seminar in Dublin

The annual seminar, which is held under the auspices of the Church of Ireland journal, Search, will take place today (Saturday) in the Church of Ireland Theological College, Braemor Park, Dublin. Search, which is directed by an editorial committee under the chairmanship of the Revd Dr John Bartlett and edited by the Dean of Killaloe, Dr Stephen White, appears three times each year. It focuses on matters of theology, education and history and its annual seminar seeks to provoke and promote new thinking on major issues confronting the church.

The conference organizers, the Revd Patrick Comerford, of CMS Ireland, and Dr Andrew Pierce from the Irish School of Ecumenics, have chosen a topic which would have been relevant at any time but, in the light of recent events, has become even more so - “War and Morality: the Church and Foreign Policy in the Present Crisis”.

The principal speakers will be Dr Bill McSweeny, Research Fellow in the Irish School of Ecumenics, Dr Ian Iain Atack, Lecturer in International Peace Studies, and Dr Linda Hogan, Lecturer in Peace Studies and Human Rights, both of whom teach in ISE and Trinity, and Mr Paul Gillespie of The Irish Times.

Tomorrow (Sunday) the preacher at the College Eucharist in the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin, will be Professor Anthony Gittens, the distinguished theologian from the USA. In Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, there will be a lunch in the crypt in support of the Special Olympics and in St Patrick’s Cathedral, at Evensong, the Lenten address will be given by the Chief Executive of Concern, Mr Tom Arnold. Evensong in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, will be sung by the Renaissance Singers from Edinburgh University while in St Flannan’s Cathedral, Killaloe, at 4.00 pm, the joint choirs of All Saints and the Church of the Guardian Angels, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, will perform Maunder’s Olivet to Calvary.

On Tuesday the Executive Committee of the Representative Church Body will meet in Church of Ireland House, Dublin, and on Wednesday and Thursday the bishops will meet.

Two distinguished members of the Church of Ireland will be conferred with honorary degrees by the National University of Ireland at a ceremony in Dublin Castle on Thursday. The former Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Walton Empey, and Supreme Court Judge, Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness, will receive LL.D. degrees. In St Patrick’s Church, Greystones the Bishop of Tuam, Dr Richard Henderson, will conduct a Quiet Evening, beginning at 8.00 pm, while in St Maelruain’s Church, Tallaght, there will be a free concert, sponsored by South Dublin County Council, by Chris Newman (guitar) and Maire Ni Chathasaigh (harp).

On Friday evening, at 8.00 pm, in Germaine’s, Baltinglass, there will be a Charity Auction in aid of the Roof Restoration Fund of St Nicholas’ Church, Dunlavin. At the same time, in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, there will be a concert by the Cathedral Chamber Choir.

A new edition of Dr Kenneth Milne’s Church of Ireland history has appeared. Originally published as The Church of Ireland. A History by APCK in 1966, it was re-issued in differing formats in 1981 and 1994 and has proved to be one of the most enduring and influential Church of Ireland publications. The text tells the story of the Church of Ireland in the context of Irish history and is amplified by a series of well chosen illustrations with explanatory captions. The new edition, entitled A Short History of the Church of Ireland, has been published by Columba Press in association with APCK.
