New Dean of Waterford
On Tuesday, the Feast of St Mary Magdalene, the Bishop of Cashel and Ossory will institute the Revd Trevor Lester to the incumbency of the Waterford group of parishes and at the same service he will be installed as Dean of Waterford.
Mr Lester was ordained in 1989 for the curacy of Douglas and Frankfield in the Diocese of Cork and served a second curacy in Kilkenny where, among other duties, he was responsible for the library in St Canice’s Cathedral. Since 1995 he has been Rector of the Abbeystrewry union of parishes which is centred on Skibbereen in Co. Cork.
As Dean of Waterford he will succeed the present Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, the Rt Revd Peter Barrett, and will assume responsibility for the late 18th century Christ Church Cathedral, designed by John Roberts, which is increasingly one of the focal points for the cultural life of the city. Like St Canice’s, Christ Church, also has a library which has the potential to culturally enrich Waterford.
Just as the new Dean of Waterford arrives the Vicar of Waterford will leave for on Friday evening in the Church of St John the Baptist, Seafield Road, the Revd Derek Sargent will be instituted to the incumbency of Clontarf by the Archbishop of Dublin. The preacher will be Mr Sargent’s former rector in Waterford, the Bishop of Cashel and Ossory.
Mr Sargent was ordained in 1999 for the curacy of Waterford Cathedral and in 2001 became Vicar of the Waterford group of parishes with particular responsibility for Tramore, Annestown and Dunmore East. As Rector of Clontarf he will succeed Canon Tom Haskins who is now Vicar of St Ann’s and St Stephen’s, Dublin.
Tomorrow (Sunday) the Archbishop of Dublin will celebrate the Eucharist and preach in St John’s Church, Clondalkin. In Christ Church Leeson Park, there will be a joint service with the Methodists from Centenary at which the speaker will be Anne Freudenberg, a student from the Irish School of Ecumenics who is a member of the Lutheran in Ireland. In Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, the services will be sung by the Priory Singers from Belfast, while in St Patrick’s Cathedral the visiting choir will be from St Peter’s College, Oxford. In the evening in the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, Cashel, there will be a concert by the Clonmel Gospel Choir.
On Wednesday the 140th anniversary of Christ Church, Bray, will be marked by a special service at which the Archbishop of Dublin will dedicate the refurbished interior. The preacher will be the former Bishop of Connor, the Rt Revd James Moore, who has strong family associations with the parish. His father, the late Bishop of Kilmore, was a curate in Bray in the 1930s and his grandfather, Canon Digby Scott, was rector there from 1910 to 1943. In Co. Wexford the Ardamine Union annual Summer Bazaar will begin at 7.00 pm in the Riverside Community Centre while at 8.00 pm in St Ann’s Church, Dublin, the church choir will present a Summer Serenade of music with Derek Mooney (tenor), Peter O’Connor (organ) and Peter Plunkett (oboe).
The second concert in the 23rd Festival of Classical Music in St Barrahane’s Church, Castletownshend, Co. Cork, will be held on Thursday evening when the well known Kelly family from Cork will be the performers. In St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork, there will be a concert by the choir of Rochester Cathedral, Kent, who will also sing in St Multose’s Church, Kinsale on Friday evening.
