Historical Society Meets in Dublin

Today (Saturday) the Church of Ireland Historical Society will meet in the Chapter House of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, at 10.30 am. In the morning session the Revd Professor Adrian Empey, Principal of the Church of Ireland Theological College, will speak on ‘James Graves - Parson Scholar’, and he will be followed the Dean of Ossory, the Very Revd Norman Lynas who will give a paper on ‘A Huguenot in Kilkenny - C.A. Vignoles’. After lunch the Revd Dr Terence McCaughey, formerly of the Department of Irish in Trinity College, Dublin, will discuss Bishop Bedell and the Translation of the Old Testament’.

One of the Historical Society’s more recent initiatives, which may be discussed, is a proposal to publish, under one cover, the two bibliographies of Church of Ireland history which have been produced in recent years. 'The Church of Ireland, A Critical Bibliography, 1536-1992', edited by Professor Alan Ford and Dr Kenneth Milne, appeared in Irish Historical Studies in 1993 while ‘The Church of Ireland and its History: Some Recent Writings', by Dr Raymond Gillespie and Canon John Crawford, was published in Search earlier this year.

A new publication which is likely to be of interest to members of the Church of Ireland Historical Society is Professor Robert Matteson’s work on the collections of Archbishop William King many of whose books are in the Bolton Library in Cashel. A large private park: the collections of archbishop William King, 1650-1729 is published by LP Publications of Cambridge and will be launched later this month in the University of Limerick.

Today (Saturday) the Bishop of Cashel and Ossory will be in London for meetings with the Anglican Old Catholic Society, which will continue until Monday.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is Remembrance Sunday which will be marked in differing ways and in differing degrees throughout the Church of Ireland. In Dublin, in the morning there will be a Requiem Eucharist to the setting of Durufle in Christ Church Cathedral while in St Patrick’s Cathedral, in the afternoon, the preacher will be the Revd Brian McAvoy MBE. In the Chapel of Trinity College the preacher at the College Act of Remembrance will be the Papal Nuncio, the Most Revd Giuseppe Lazzarotto.

On Wednesday the Diocese of Cashel and Ossory will host a special Liturgy Day in Kilkenny on the topic of the forthcoming Book of Common Prayer. The speakers will be Canon Richard Rountree and Revd Professor Paul Bradshaw. In Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, the speaker at the lunchtime lecture in the series on archbishops of Dublin, will be Dr Helga Robinson-Hammerstein whose subject will be Archbishop Adam Loftus.

Friday is the Feast of St Laurence O’Toole, patron saint of Dublin and of Christ Church Cathedral where there will be a meeting of the Chapter. The meeting will be followed by a celebration of the Eucharist by the Revd Douglas Slator, an honorary priest vicar in the cathedral since 1990, who will be marking the 60th anniversary of his ordination. In Kilkenny the Archbishop of Dublin and the Bishop of Cashel and Ossory will jointly bless the new extension to Kilkenny College while in St Mary’s Church, Athlone, the Bishop of Meath and Kildare will institute the Revd Graham Doyle, formerly Rector of Killeshandra, to the incumbency.

Dr Susan Hood, Assistant Librarian and Archivist in the RCB Library, has returned from a successful visit to New York, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis and St Paul where she has been promoting the archival resources of the Library among Irish-American groups and professional genealogical organizations.
