DRUMCREE Statement by Archbishop Robin Eames

"On Sunday 6th July the members of Portadown L.O.L. No 1. will attend Morning Prayer at Drumcree Parish Church on the invitation of the Rector and Select Vestry. Public worship of Almighty God is a privilege which must be treated with the utmost respect.

"In the light of past experience I appeal to all who attend this service to do so in a calm and dignified manner which befits the respect due to the public worship of Almighty God.

"In the past there were those who were ready to use this occasion as an excuse for confrontation and violence in the vicinity and further afield. Such behaviour brings disgrace on all concerned and further heightens community tensions.

"A solution to the 'Drumcree issue' must be found and I am convinced it will emerge in ways which respect the diverse aspirations of all sides. A calm and peaceful atmosphere outside Drumcree Parish Church next Sunday will hasten this solution. I appeal on behalf of all who are working so hard to find that solution for calmness, dignity and responsible behaviour at the conclusion of the service and in following days."
