ARCHBISHOP EAMES DEDICATES MEMORIAL WINDOW IN DRUMADD BARRACKS, ARMAGH

“It is said that time heals. Sadly there are memories which may grow less vivid as time passes – but they are never lost. Those are the very personal memories of a face, a voice, a life which have been taken from those who loved them most through the violence of terrorism. A photograph, a letter or a newspaper clipping remain the tangible reminders of those loved ones. Those are the memories which as the poet says ‘lie too deep for tears.’

“Today we remember them before God. We remember them with pride. We share the sense of loss of families and friends. We commit them to the mercy and healing of Almighty God.

“Today we are told so often that Northern Ireland has moved on from the darkness of those days. Yet the memories of that past linger on for memory is one of the most important human characteristics – it makes us what we are.

“If those memories of the past mean anything in Northern Ireland this morning it must surely be a new determination that we will never, never let the tragic past return. That is the call of the vast majority of people in our community. It is a call we cannot ignore. It makes it all the more important that we build for a future of peace and understanding. It makes it all the more important that despite the difficulties we all recognise politicians redouble their efforts to face up to the challenge. It makes it all the more important that ways are found to reach political stability now that the election is over. The memories we cherish this morning in this service of Remembrance deserve, demand and call out for that response ….”

The memorial window at Drumadd Barracks, Armagh is dedicated to those members killed on active service in the former 2nd, 3rd, 8th, and 11th Battalions of the Ulster Defence Regiment and the 3rd, 6th and 8th Battalions of the Royal Irish Regiment.
